However, the script was flipped after the break as Interim coach Simon Easterby had his side flying out of the blocks.
And Ireland proved why they were the tournament favourites to win a first-ever Six Nations hat-trick as they carved England apart throughout the half.
The saving grace was a late flourish from Steve Borthwick’s side that ensured they escaped with a precious losing bonus point.
