“Doesn’t seem quite right for this character”: James Bond Actor’s Comment Reinforces Henry Cavill Should Be the Next 007 After He Lost to Daniel Craig

One look at Henry Cavill; it is obvious that he was born to play James Bond. With British suave and an incredible body of work in the action genre, Cavill has long been fancast as Agent 007. The Superman star has also campaigned for himself and had reportedly auditioned for the role but lost to Daniel Craig.

While hopes for Cavill as Bond dim, they might be reinvigorated after statements from James Bond star Timothy Dalton. The actor mentioned that he was approached for the role in his 20s, way before starring in The Living Daylights. Dalton’s reasoning for why he rejected the offer back then gives hope to a lot of Cavill stans.

Henry Cavill has long been a top contender for the role of James Bond but seems to have missed out by an inch. He auditioned for the role back when the production was choosing its next Bond after Pierce Brosnan but lost to Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. An audition tape of Cavill was recently leaked online.

While Cavill did not get the role back then, he has campaigned himself for the role on multiple occasions. His status as Superman could have been and still could be a major reason why he may not get the role as the production usually wanted actors who fans would only associate as James Bond. But all may not be bad news for Cavill.

Actor Timothy Dalton, who played Agent 007 in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, and replaced Roger Moore recently revealed that he had been offered the role once before when Sean Connery had departed from the part. However, Dalton reportedly rejected it. He said (via Variety),

There was a time when Sean Connery was leaving. I can’t say I was offered it, but I was asked if I’d like to do it or not. And I said ‘No,’ because it seemed to me that the age of 24 or 25 doesn’t seem quite right for this character. … He needs to be [older]. You could play it at that younger age, but I don’t know that I’d believe it that much.

Dalton also mentioned that following Sean Connery was not a task he wanted to take on. This trivia gives hope to a lot of Cavill stans as the actor is at 41 now, which is just a few years after Craig, who was 38 when he got the role in Casino Royale.

Casino Royale director claimed that Henry Cavill’s age got him rejected from James Bond

Watching Henry Cavill in films like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission Impossible: Fallout makes him all the more perfect to order a shaken-not-stirred martini, but the actor has missed out on it. He has since played the role of Superman, Sherlock Holmes, and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series, all of which are profitable IPs.

Cavill had reportedly auditioned for the role of Bond back in the 2000s and lost to Daniel Craig. However, Casino Royale director Martin Campbell reportedly liked the actor’s performance and mentioned that he had almost got the role before he was passed over on a technicality. He said to Express UK,

He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous. And look, if Daniel didn’t exist, Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape… very handsome, very chiselled. He just looked a little young at that time back then…He did very well in the audition, but ironically he was too young.

When asked if the 41-year-old Argylle star could make it as Bond now, Campbell simply mentioned that the actor would be fifty by the time the standard three-movie contract would end.
