In the world of sitcoms and family dramas, there have been a lot of entries, but perhaps none as iconic and laugh-worthy as Malcolm in the Middle. To say the least, when it first aired back in 2000, the comedy show, which follows a dysfunctional working-class family, had viewers roaring with laughter, and for all the right reasons. Now, it sounds like it’s all set to return to the screens.
Almost two decades since the last episode of the smash-hit sitcom went off the air back in 2006, the series is now confirmed to spin the Hollywood nostalgia machine once again with its return. As Disney+ confirmed, most of the main cast is returning to the screens alongside plenty of new faces to deliver epically yet again, and here’s all you need to know about the same.
Malcolm in the Middle is returning, and so is most of the core cast
After long, long years of fans asking the studios to do something with Malcolm in the Middle and bring it back in a reboot or even a reunion show, Disney+ has finally answered all of those prayers. In December 2024, it announced that Frankie Muniz, the actor who embodied Malcolm for the original series, had signed on to do so once again for a miniseries of the same.
Per the announcement, this new project will be a limited-time, four-episode-long show, which is reportedly set to start production in Vancouver this April. As Muniz tweeted on X on March 24, “Just started watching Malcolm in the Middle episode 1. Got 151 to catch up on before we start filming again in a few days!!! Can’t wait to get back together with my old family.”
From the core cast, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek have been confirmed to be returning in their roles as Malcolm’s parents, Hal and Lois, respectively. Additionally, Christopher Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese) are also set to reprise their roles (as confirmed by @DiscussingFilm on X). As for Piama, Francis’ wife? Well, there’s no word on her return as of late.
Unfortunately, Erik Per Sullivan will not be returning as Dewey, as he stepped away from acting a long time ago. But that’s not a problem, for Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is reported to be taking over the role from him. Joining this new member are Anthony Timpano as Malcolm’s brother Jamie, Vaughan Murrae as Malcolm’s youngest sibling Kelly, Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend Tristan, and Keeley Karsten as Malcolm’s daughter Leah.
Besides them, the original show’s creator Linwood Boomer is returning as a writer and executive producer on this revival show with Cranston, Tracy Katsky of KatCo, Gail Berman, and New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann joining him as co-executive producers.
What will this revival series be about, and when will it be released?
Back in 2022, Frankie Muniz revealed that Bryan Cranston had been working on a script for this revival, telling Fox News Digital: “I know Bryan Cranston is really into the idea and he’s kind of heading writing the script and getting everything rolling.” Variety, in the meanwhile, confirmed Disney Branded Television for having ordered four new episodes of the fan-favorite sitcom.
As per Variety’s reports, the official logline of this revamped series revealed: “Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.” However, beyond this, details about the plotline of the same are sparse.
But four episodes only? Well, as Muniz told ScreenRant, the show is currently confirmed to have about four episodes only, but these will function as one storyline. “And we leave it on a great note, you know, and then we’ll see what happens after that,” he added. So more of Malcolm in the Middle awaiting fans in the future, perhaps? Guess we’ll see about that.
Malcolm in the Middle reboot series does not have a premiere date confirmed yet. The original series, in the meanwhile, can currently be streamed on Hulu.
