The story of Bleach concluded in 2016, and nearly a decade later, fans are still as invested as ever in the manga’s lore. The Arrancar hierarchy in particular keeps the curiosity high with the different classifications. From Menos Grande to Espada, there were many different characters to represent every category. However, the Vasto Lordes were the rarest of them all.

For the longest time, fans have been questioning which of the characters have been confirmed to be Vasto Lorde. Although it’s difficult, it makes one hope for a potential spin-off dedicated to them. Interestingly, there’s some additional information available about them, but it’s all beyond the manga.
Everything we know about Vasto Lordes in Bleach
The Vasto Lordes are the highest class of menos. They are smaller in size compared to the other Hollows and Arrancars and are also the rarest of them all. There are only a few known Vasto Lordes, namely Starrk, Barragan, Ulquiorra, and Halibel. There are some other characters including Nnoitra, Grimmjow, and Szayelaporro, who supposedly fall under the same category.
The light novels delve into that, but there’s still some confusion. In the novel series, Can’t Fear Your Own World, it’s mentioned that most of the Espada are Vasto Lorde. Grimmjow is said to be on the same level as them, but it’s not quite clear if he’s one. A Reddit user expressed how it’d be great if Studio Pierrot could adapt the novels.
The comment mentions Grimmjow’s transformation, but it’s quite uncertain if one can even transform into a Vasto Lorde. Ulquiorra was already a Vasto Lorde before he even joined Aizen. The same is true for Starrk and Halibel. With Baraggan, there are some inconsistencies, but considering how he was the King of Hueco Mundo, it’s safe to assume that he was one as well.
The one known method through which Adjuchas could transform into Vasto Lorde was by consuming a huge number of Hollows. This method was questioned by Shawlong after he tried it out, and it was not the most effective either. All this confusion can easily be cleared if the information from the novels expands the canon narrative of Bleach.
Ichigo defies the information we know about Vasto Lordes

During his fight against Ulquiorra, Ichigo nearly died. His new form became popular as the Vasto Lorde form of Ichigo. This was due to his immense power. He easily overpowered Ulquiorra in that form and could barely be recognized as a human. His appearance was completely different than what we were familiar with.
However, he never consumed Hollows, so how did he transform into a Vasto Lorde? It was later revealed that it was probably Zangetsu, who had taken over. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that Ichigo isn’t a Vasto Lorde. The curiosity still remains about their lore and it’ll be interesting to see it getting expanded in the anime, although the chances of that happening are quite slim.
Bleach is available to stream on Netflix.
