Russell Brand Explains Why Katy Perry Divorced Him

We’ve heard about Katy Perry’s unwillingness to have children breaking her marriage with Russell Brand, followed by Brand’s lack of support for the pop star, and him being intimidated by her success, damaging their relationship. But recently, the English star reflected on his divorce from Perry and shared yet another different reason for their separation.

Taking to his podcast and later sharing the same clip via X, Russell Brand reflected on his high-profile divorce from Katy Perry. Therein, claiming that there was nothing off-key with the singer, Brand simply mentioned how they fell apart due to normal, human reasons.

Russell Brand explained the reason behind his divorce from Katy Perry

Back in the day, Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s whirlwind romance had suddenly become the talk of Hollywood in 2011. Why? The duo tied the knot in October 2010, only to call it quits within a year, in December 2011. Thereafter, the duo made notorious headlines for stating their respective reasons for divorce.

However, more than a decade later, Russell Brand addressed his high-profile divorce from the pop star and offered a new explanation during a recent podcast episode. Admitting that their split wasn’t about drama, fame, or some secret betrayal, Brand noted that they divorced because of normal human reasons.

What I can tell you is, when I was married to Katy Perry, she was like a… not entirely normal, because she’s an extraordinary, massive star, but she wasn’t weird or off-key or wasn’t involved in anything nefarious.

And the reason that our marriage didn’t work are the normal human reasons that marriages don’t work. And I have nothing but respect for her, even though I obviously disagree with her political views.

Describing how their divorce was a natural part of life, where two people grew apart instead of growing together, Russell Brand implied that there was no scandal or no one was the villain in the destruction of their marriage. While that might not be as juicy as past theories, it does make sense.

Previous reasons cited by Russell Brand and Katy Perry for their divorce

Now, although Russell Brand tried to justify his divorce from Katy Perry for normal reasons, with decency and lack of scandal, they had previously thrown each other under the bus, following their split in December 2011. Perry had told Vogue in 2013 about how she received a text message “saying he was divorcing me 31 December 2011”.

Who seeks a divorce on text? Probably Russell Brand. But that’s not all, because prior to Katy Perry’s confessions, Brand had separately addressed the reasons for their split, in an interview with Howard Stern on his Sirius XM show. Therein, he suggested Perry’s unwillingness to have children ultimately led to their split (via The Independent).

Meanwhile, Katy Perry blamed Russell Brand’s lack of support as the reason behind their fallout during her Vogue interview. Claiming how the English comedian felt intimidated by her success and stardom, Perry stated his failure at handling their “equalness” resulted in the singer feeling hurt and further leading to their separation.

However, now, with Russell Brand’s latest revelation that their breakup was just a “human” experience, it seems like both stars have moved on. After their fair share of mud-slinging, the stars are now back to their normal life with their respective partners
