Many relationships in the anime world have been hyped up by fans to the point where they have become the central focus of the entire series. One such anime relationship that fans deem to be quite underrated is between Rebecca Lee(Revy) and Rokuro Okajima (Rock) from the famous seinen anime and manga series, Black Lagoon.
Black Lagoon is one of the most popular manga series, which originally started in 2002, and because of the manga creator Rei Hiroe’s multiple hiatuses, it is still going on. The story also got an anime adaptation by Studio Madhouse, but it ended after two seasons and a five-episode OVA. Still, Black Lagoon has earned a lot of fame and recognition, and fans hope to see another anime adaptation of the series.
Black Lagoon may be famous for its unique action sequences and thriller plots, but what stands out most from the story is the exchange between Rock and Revy. Rock and Revy are the two protagonists of Black Lagoon, and the extremity of their personalities that fits perfectly with the other makes them one of the best aspects of the Black Lagoon storyline.
The two main characters of Black Lagoon
The story of Black Lagoon is quite underrated as it follows the adventures of a group of mercenaries known as the Lagoon Company, which is known for smuggling goods throughout Southeast Asia using the sea. The group has four members, and all four of them are significant to the company in their own ways that help the group survive and move forward.
The two leading members of the group are Revy and Rock, who are also the protagonists of the entire Black Lagoon series. Rock, also known as Rokuro Okajima, was a normal salaryman who was abducted by the Lagoon company and eventually became a part of the group as their negotiator. Rock’s journey is the highlight of the Black Lagoon story.
Revy, on the other hand has had a more complicated past than anyone else in the story. She has been a part of the Lagoon company since the beginning, and she is the main gunfighter who jumps in first in battle. Revy is a complex character, and her cynical nature makes her the perfect character to indirectly lead the Black Lagoon.
Revy and Rock’s personalities complement each other
When the Black Lagoon series started, Rock and Revy hated each other to the core. Their initial interaction where Revy kidnapped Rock for additional bonus did not work in the favor of their bond and thus, the two always butted heads with each other on various aspects. However, these confrontations between the two weirdly fit perfectly because of their personalities.
Revy’s personality can be summed up as too self-centered and Rock’s personality can be summed up as too self-righteous. While they are completely different from each other, the extreme nature of their personalities aligns with each other and thus, in a way, makes them a perfect couple who is constantly fighting, but still can’t live without the other.
While both of them can embody each other’s personality, they intentionally seal it off because of their past experiences. This way, they see the reflection of their hidden self in the other individual and form a unique dynamic that creates a parallel character development, which eventually becomes the main aspect of the entire story.
