Let Me Explain Why ‘The Beginning After the End’ Has an Undeniable Advantage Over ‘Mushoku Tensei’

The Beginning After the End is getting compared to Mushoku Tensei left, right, and center, and there are reasons for that. For starters, the creator of TBATE admitted that their story was heavily inspired by Rifujin na Magonote’s masterpiece.

Moreover, after the first episode aired, terrible animation aside, I was shocked to see just how similar the portrayal of both Arthur Leywin and Rudeus Greyrat’s childhood seemed. However, there is one big advantage The Beginning After the End has over Mushoku Tensei, and I’m here to explain that to you.

The Beginning After the End has one big advantage over Mushoku Tensei

The Beginning After the End and Mushoku Tensei share a lot of similarities. While Mushoku Tensei is widely hailed as one of the best Isekai anime series, The Beginning After the End was one of the most anticipated. Although I was severely disappointed after that first episode, all hope might not be lost just yet. Confused? Let me explain it to you.

Even with the blatant similarities between the two series, to the point of TBATE being inspired by Mushoku Tensei, there is one aspect where both series differ greatly.

That is the way their storylines transition. Mushoku Tensei follows the story of a jobless loser and outcast being reincarnated in a fantasy world as Rudeus Greyrat with all of the memories of his past life intact. As the story progresses, he makes it a mission to enjoy life’s pleasures while mastering sorcery so he doesn’t have to die again with regrets.

The Beginning After the End, on the other hand, follows King Grey, a battle-hardened, ruthless leader who is reincarnated as Arthur Leywin in a magical world, whose strong magic garners attention since he was a toddler.

As the story progresses, Arthur reflects on the errors of his past life and vows to live a life filled with peace, kindness, and sincerity with his loved ones. The Beginning After the End then shifts to a young Arthur standing once again on the precipice of his nation at war with complexities that threaten to take him back to a crueler version of himself.

Moreover, he, as well as the readers, slowly realizes that King Grey didn’t reincarnate as Arthur Leywin on a random whim of fate but for very good reasons.

Furthermore, he wasn’t the only one to do so. Although both shows seem pretty similar up until a certain point, the focus of both stories shifts abruptly. That is exactly the edge The Beginning After the End has over Mushoku Tensei.

The Beginning After the End can still turn around if they try really, really, really hard

As I stated above, Mushoku Tensei primarily focuses on a self-fulfilling fantasy of an outcast who died with too many regrets to count. Whereas The Beginning After the End takes the readers on a journey of the redemption arc of a monster through new battles and wars that can make or break the fate of a nation.

Interestingly, the TBATE manhwa starts as a pretty generic Isekai story. However, it slowly elevates itself into one of the best series in the genre ever.

As such, I’m still hoping that the animators have saved their best work for the action and adventure sequences in the series, i.e., the portions where The Beginning After the End truly peaks. It turns out that other fans seem to be of a similar mind.

“The anime wasn’t that bad” 💔🥀

The Beginning After the End was one of the most anticipated anime series of summer 2025. However, all my hopes and dreams went down the drain after that first episode.

Although only time will tell just how accurate my prediction is, I’ll take one for the team and hope for the best one last time, regardless.

The Beginning After the End and Mushoku Tensei are both streaming on Crunchyroll.
