On the April 1 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore, along with her pals Valerie Bertinelli and Ross Mathews, discussed a viral PEOPLE report. It says a woman called off her wedding after discovering her fiancé had secretly bought a house with his mother. This sparked Barrymore to recall her own relationship experience, “This happened to me— whoever you are, madam out there.”

While it did not involve a wedding, it ended just as dramatically when her then-boyfriend wanted his mom to become a permanent part of their home. She revealed,

I moved in with one of first boyfriends and I was really excited, We get the most cute little house in Los Feliz, California, I’m like, ‘I’ gonna be a hipster with my live-in boyfriend! Oh my God, I’m Mary Tyler Moore-ing it!

However, things took an unexpected turn when her boyfriend casually mentioned that his mother was going to move in with them. After asking how long his mother would be staying, the answer quashed her dream: “Like, maybe forever? Indefinitely.” That’s when the actress knew it was time to go, and her reply was,

I literally go, ‘I gotta go. I gotta go. Are you out of your mind? Your mother– have I met your mother? He’s like, ‘No’. I’m like, ‘So, I don’t know your mother?’ He’s like, ‘No, I think you’ll be fine.’ I’m like, ‘I have mother issues! I’m leaving. Here’s my laundry basket — I’m out!’

The crowd erupted with laughter as Barrymore explained how she walked out of the relationship. She made it clear that she wasn’t willing to compromise her space and personal life for a man, especially one with a live-in mom. Her decision was a clear response to the importance of boundaries and personal space in relationships.

Later in the episode, Barrymore, who is a mom of two daughters, Frankie and Olive, shared her perspective on dating as a single parent: “I don’t really know how exactly to do it.” She reflected on the challenges of blending dating with motherhood.

I’ll go on a date here or a date there, and I feel like it’s sort of in my adult life; it’s not really a part of my real world or my home life.

The Wedding Singer actor went on to share that her daughters often encourage her to meet someone new, but she’s clear on her priorities. She explained that her priority is to keep her family life separate from any new relationships, and she is perfectly okay with that, “Because if there was something missing or I was really unfulfilled or I needed something, I would be true to that.”

For those people who’ve had their own moments in relationships, Barrymore’s honesty about boundaries is nothing short of refreshing. Whether she’s saying goodbye to an ex over an ill-fated living arrangement or making sure her kids remain at the heart of her decisions, Barrymore proves that staying true to who you are is always the best move.
