Ananya began by acknowledging that many of the characters she has played have contained aspects of herself. “It is true that a few of the characters I have played have had pieces of me in them,” she said. “But in every film I do, I try to play a little off myself. But that doesn’t mean I am playing myself on screen.” She further explained how she channeled the raw energy of an upcoming lawyer in Kesari 2, particularly since her character is the only female lawyer in a room full of men.
“I try to channel that raw nervous energy of an upcoming lawyer because she is the only female lawyer among so many men,” she added. “The power that she got from within, while she was fighting that case, I tried to channel a little bit of that from my own experience starting out in my career when I was 18. There weren’t many women on set then, so I did try to take a little from my life from that.”
Ananya also spoke about how her role was a departure from anything she had done before. “Yes, it was different from anything I have done before. I learned Punjabi for the film. There was a lot of posturing, so a lot of preparation went into that,” she said.
Reflecting on her own learning process while working on the film, Ananya revealed how Kesari 2 gave her a deeper understanding of India’s history. “My memory is the same as that of the school books. We were taught that General Dyer carried out the firing, but we didn’t know the exact details,” she said. “I had heard stories from my grandmother about the Partition, but it was through the script that I got to know exactly what happened. I was shocked to know how much happened, and we didn’t even know one percent of it. Thanks to the book and thanks to the script, I learned a lot. I hope people, after watching the film, will also learn something.”
Kesari 2 starring Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan and Ananya Pandey is directed by Karan Singh Tyagi. Produced by Dharma Productions, the film is all set to hit the cinemas on 18 April, 2025.
