A 54-year-old farmer, Jeremiah Onuminya, from the Usha community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, reportedly slumped and died following a false alarm raised by some youths in the village. Onuminya was on his way to his farm on Monday, March 31, when some boys suddenly shouted Fulani! Fulani!! prompting panic among villagers. In an attempt to flee, the farmer collapsed a few meters from his house and died. A village source confirmed the incident, stating, Unfortunately, he was a few meters from his house when he slumped and died. According to locals, the deceaseds farm was next to another farmland where 20 cows were allegedly poisoned last Saturday. The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin James, confirmed the incident in a statement issued by his media aide, Solomon Obochi, in Makurdi on Wednesday. Agatu Local Government Council deeply mourns the unfortunate demise of Mr. Jeremiah Onuminya from Usha Ward, who passed away on March 31, 2025, following a distressing incident triggered by a false alarm about an impending attack, the statement read. James noted that preliminary investigations, corroborated by security agencies and the family of the deceased, indicated that Onuminya collapsed due to exhaustion while fleeing, and there was no evidence of an assault by Fulani herdsmen. In an effort to ascertain the exact cause of death, the chairman suggested conducting an autopsy. However, the family declined, accepting that Onuminyas passing resulted from health complications, the statement added. The council chairman urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could incite panic and disrupt the peace. He warned that raising false alarms poses significant risks to public safety and undermines efforts to foster unity and security in the region. While reaffirming his commitment to the safety and security of Agatu residents, James assured that the local government would continue working with security agencies to maintain vigilance and address potential threats. He appealed to residents to verify information before sharing to prevent similar tragic incidents. The incident follows allegations by the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Risku Mohammed, who claimed on Sunday that a farmer in Usha had poisoned 20 cows belonging to one of his members. The post
