The Far Sideentered publication at the start of 1980, and by the middle of the decade it was a staple of newspapers across the United States; in its first few years, however, The Far Side was only carried by a handful of papers, and success was far from guaranteed – in fact, the same comics that eventually established Gary Larson as a household name could have been his downfall.
