James Gunn Calls Krypto “the Worst Dog in the World”: David Corenswet Details His Special Relationship From Superman

After years of anticipation, James Gunn’s vision of Superman is finally set to hit theaters, and excitement is at an all-time high. Months before the film’s grand release, Gunn took the stage at CinemaCon to reveal some intriguing details about his take on the Man of Steel, including an unexpected but hilarious take on Superman’s super-powered dog, Krypto.

In subsequent interviews at CinemaCon, Gunn and Corenswet did not hold back when revealing the details about Superman’s relationship with the super canine. Calling him the ‘worst dog in the world,’ Gunn later disclosed what inspired him to create this iteration of Superman’s four-legged companion.

James Gunn‘s Superman will hit the theatres in July, but ahead of the film’s release, the cast and crew of the film recently attended CinemaCon. Revealing some exclusive details and footage to the audience, the part that caught the attention of fans the most was Superman’s dog Krypto.

In the said footage that features quite a bit about the dog, David Corenswet‘s Superman scolds Krypto for destroying the Fortress of Solitude while he was gone. Later, while discussing the same in an interview with Fandango at the event, Corenswet revealed details about Superman and Krypto’s relationship:

Krypto needs Superman and Superman doesn’t need Krypto. Its sort of a foster situation… He loves dogs but as James Gunn described is the ‘worst dog in the world’ with superpowers. So, he is always destroying Fortress of Solitude, hunting wild life, always getting into trouble, never listening.

Further labeling it as more trouble than it’s worth, Corenswet stated that as for how their relationship evolves, one will have to see the film. Whether this means Krypto will remain mischievous, unruly, difficult to manage, or his relationship with Superman will grow into a lovable one remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Gunn’s interpretation of the super-dog will be anything but boring.

James Gunn’s Superman is reportedly based on the All-Star Superman DC Comics, and Krypto the Superdog is often seen alongside the Man of Steel in the comics. But as for his big screen debut, the comics weren’t the only inspiration Gunn had.

While at CinemaCon, Gunn revealed that Krypto was in part inspired by his own dog named Ozu. Apparently, Gunn had once rescued the emotionally damaged canine, who was quite a bit of work. Not only would Ozu run away from him, but he would also destroy his furniture, electronics, and even attack Gunn’s feet, making him climb up the kitchen counter to protect himself (via Variety).

Well, one day Gunn thought, what if his dog had super powers, and hence, this iteration of Krypto was born. I didn’t know if he was playing or he hated my guts— stated Gunn while recalling his own dog (via USA Today). Well, suffice to say it is going to be entertaining when Superman finally comes to the big screen and knowing this iteration of Krypto, he is bound to steal the show, which we can’t wait for!

Superman will be in theatres on July 11, 2025.
