'Not Everyone's Rich Like Us' — SG Woman Insulted By Mum's Reply To Child Who Ranted Over RM13 'Duit Raya'

During festive events like Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, adults would usually hand out money packets (known as angpao or duit Raya) to young or unmarried people as a way to celebrate the occasion.

However, there will always be a handful of receivers who would grumble over the amount of money given or worse still, make remarks that paints the giver in a poor light.

Child complains over RM13 ‘duit Raya’, mum gives shocking reply

In a Threads post by @nrljnhr_, she wrote that she was in her fifth year of not giving out ‘duit Raya‘ to children due to past experiences which led her to believe that they “do not deserve it”.

She then brought up an instance where she gave out S$4 (approx. RM13) in ‘duit Raya’ to a group of kids. When one of them opened the money envelope, instead of thanking the OP for her generosity, she remarked, “$4 aje, Mummy.” (It’s only S$4, mummy).

Just when the OP (like most people) expected that the child’s mother would reprimand her child for her lack of manners, what came out from her mouth left the OP’s jaw on the floor.

Instead of the mum correcting the child for the zero adab (manners), she said, ‘Not everyone is rich like we are.’

“I literally asked for the envelope back and asked them to leave. But they didn’t want to give it back. You claim to be rich, so why are you so desperate for that $4?” she fumed.

‘Why so rude?!’

In the comment thread, netizens were floored by the child’s rudeness and her mother’s equally disrespectful response to the RM13 ‘duit Raya’.

‘Why are kids so rude omg. Her mum’s the same too, no manners at all. Our parents taught us to only open (duit Raya) after the visit or after we’ve gone home. And S$4 is okay what! I also would give S$4,’ wrote one netizen.

Another wrote that the woman had squandered the chance to teach her child to have gratefulness but instead chose to perpetuate her “superiority complex”.

Meanwhile, one questioned the rationale behind giving out money packets during festive occasions, arguing that it only teaches children to be money-minded.
