NICOLA Sturgeon’s sister told a court that her ex-boyfriend tried to shove her down stairs after she confronted him about cheating allegations.
Gillian Sturgeon, 50, said she lost her footing but grabbed a banister then spat in Steven Waite’s face.

Recalling the alleged scuffle at Waite’s home, the former First Minister’s younger sibling said: “He pushed me down. Yes, I spat in his face. I’m not proud of it, but it was just instinctual. I was scared. He called me a dirty b****.”
Waite, 53, of Kilwinning, denies domestic abuse of her and another former partner, Amanda MacFarlane, in Ayrshire and Portugal between 2021 and 2024.
Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard Waite dumped beauty consultant Ms Sturgeon in August 2021 after over a year together but continued to join her at family dinners and told her he loved her.
On hearing he had started seeing Ms MacFarlane, Ms Sturgeon went to his home “for an explanation”.
Waite told the court: “I didn’t invite her in. I must have asked her ten times to leave and she refused.”
And Ms Sturgeon threatened to walk out of the court when his solicitor Donna Maitland asked her: “Have you heard the expression ‘a woman scorned’?”
Ms Sturgeon replied: “I want to leave. This is going down a road I don’t want to go down.”
Reminded she was under oath, she answered: “I am not a woman scorned.”
Ms MacFarlane said her relationship with Waite began in May 2021.
She said he became “toxic, aggressive and violent” within months.
One night, after an argument, she said she woke up to find him strangling her.
Ms MacFarlane said: “I lost consciousness. I came to and, when I could catch a breath, I tried to calm him down.”
She said Waite also slashed her stomach while “messing about with a kitchen knife” and threw a candle, car key and shoe box at her.
Waite told the court: “None of that happened.”
The trial continues.
