The RAF confirmed that two typhoons jets were scrambled from its Lossiemouth base today.

Crews were alerted to a mid-air incident where a commercial flight failed to make contact with air traffic control.

The jets were sent to investigate the incident.

Communications were re-established between the plane and air traffic control.

No further action was required.

At the time of the incident, residents in Arbroath took to social media to ask if anyone else heard the “loud bang”, which some believed to be a sonic boom.

A sonic boom is a loud explosive noise caused by the shock wave from an aircraft travelling faster than the speed of sound.

One person said: “Up dog sitting in Arbroath. A massive bang just happened and shook the doors of his house.

“Anyone know what is was?”

Another wrote: “Did anyone just hear that loud bang and know where it came from? Got the fright of my life.”

A third commented: “I think the toon just experienced a sonic boom!”

While a fourth added: “Who heard the sonic boom earlier over Arbroath? Thought it was just me hearing things but apparently not.”

And a fifth said: “My windows were rattling, poor cat nearly had a heart attack!”

An RAF Lossiemouth spokesperson said: “We can confirm that RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth today after a civilian aircraft failed to make contact with air traffic control.

“Communications between the aircraft and ATC were re-established and no further action was required.”
