Netflix’s Daredevil remains one of the most celebrated superhero series of all time, lauded for its gritty storytelling, complex characters, and breathtaking action sequences. However, despite its critical acclaim and passionate fanbase, the show was abruptly canceled after its third season in 2018, leaving fans yearning for more.
Erik Oleson, the showrunner for Season 3, recently shed light on what could have been in a scrapped Season 4.

Revealing a bold new direction that diverged significantly from the current Disney+ revival of Daredevil: Born Again, Oleson chimed in about his vision for the unproduced season, which had “Typhoid Mary” storyline along with “Bullseye” arc in Season 5.
However, Oleson’s vision could not shine on the screen as the series was discontinued on Netflix, and Dario Scardapane took charge as the showrunner for Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again.
Erik Oleson’s vision for Netflix’s Daredevil Season 4

Erik Oleson, who directed the critically acclaimed third season of Netflix’s Daredevil, recently shared details about his plans for Season 4, which never saw the light of day.
Unlike the trajectory taken by Daredevil: Born Again, Oleson envisioned a narrative centered around Typhoid Mary, a complex and chaotic Marvel villain introduced in Iron Fist Season 2. He even had plans for Season 5, where he wanted to introduce Bullseye.
In an interview with The Wrap, the director of Daredevil showed support for the revival of the franchise but chimed in about how Netflix and Disney’s tug-of-war affected it. He said:
I’m very excited that the show came back at a different network. It’s so weird. As a showrunner, you’re kind of prepared for your show to be canceled. You’re not necessarily prepared for your studio [to be canceled]. It was a very bizarre thing.
The Season 4 I had planned was quite different. It was a Typhoid Mary story. It was going to go into a different direction. And then I was going to circle back to the Bullseye storyline in Season 5. I was starting to plan out future seasons and what we would do, kind of a long arc. And then, of course, Netflix and Marvel broke up because Disney+ wanted Marvel.
The fans were equally disappointed with the scrapping of Daredevil Season 4. They had to wait for nearly six years to see the journey of Matt Murdock‘s dual life, one as a blind lawyer and the other as a vengeful vigilante.
Erik Oleson rejoices to see Daredevil stars back on the franchise with Born Again

After years of fan campaigns and speculation, Daredevil returned to the spotlight with Daredevil: Born Again, which premiered on Disney+ on March 4, 2025. Announced in 2022, the series marks a revival and continuation of the Netflix show, integrating Matt Murdock into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Charlie Cox reprises his role as the blind lawyer-turned-vigilante, joined by Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher. New characters, like Margarita Levieva’s Heather Glenn and Nikki M. James’ Kirsten McDuffie, expand the roster.
Erik Oleson could not be part of the franchise in Disney+’s revival; he had been fanboying over the series and admitted that he was thrilled to see the old cast reprising their roles. He said:
I have only seen the first episode. I’m behind because I’ve been busy doing [The Bondsman]. I had dinner with Vincent D’Onofrio a couple of weeks ago, he’s very excited. The cast, all my friends there, that family seemed very excited and they’re already starting another season of that show. So I’m thrilled to hear that family is going to exist and as a fan I’m going to be watching.(Via. The Wrap)
Despite the hurt from his breakup with the franchise that Oleson once helmed, his celebration of the series’ revival proved that he is a filmmaker with both vision and heart.
Daredevil: Born Again is available on Disney+ to watch.
