Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s daughter Apple Martin is a college gal, thriving with both her academics and extracurriculars. In fact, during her magazine debut with Interview Magazine, Apple revealed what her college major is at Vanderbilt University, and no, it’s not theater.
“I’m a law, history and society major, but I wish I would’ve taken — maybe I’ll take a theater course before I leave,” she said. “It’s a fun balance between my very different extracurriculars and my major.”
Per Vanderbilt University, the combined major, LHS, “is designed for those students who are particularly interested in how law and legal regimes worked in the past, and how they are connected to broader social, cultural, and economic patterns in the United States and around the world.”
Not only is this cool, but it’s so unlike anything her family majored in.
Her mother, Paltrow, studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for art history, and her father, Chris, enrolled at University College London, where he majored in Greek and Latin. Her stepfather Brad Falchuk was an English major with an emphasis in theatre at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
As for her grandparents, her maternal grandma, Blythe Danner, majored in acting at Bard College, while her maternal grandpa, Bruce Paltrow, majored in painting at Tulane University, per People. It’s unclear what Chris’ parents majored in, but we do know that Anthony John Martin, is a retired chartered accountant and Alison Martin is a music teacher, per Zimbabwe Mail.

While Apple is an LHS major, she is a part of Vanderbilt University’s theater program. She said, “I’m in the lovely Vanderbilt Original Cast, the esteemed cabaret theater group. This semester’s show is a musical parody of Love Island called Love on an Island. It’s so fun. The songs are phenomenal.”
Per the Vanderbilt Original Cast’s Instagram page, Apple is the Costumes Director for the Spring 2025 Board, so she’s quite involved. And if you look further into their Instagram, you can see she’s been heavily involved in costumes since 2023.

Paltrow and the Coldplay frontman Chris met back in Oct. 2002 backstage at a Coldplay concert, instantly hitting it off. They married a little over a year later, in Dec. 2003, and welcomed two children together: Apple Blythe Alison Martin, born in Oct 2004, and Moses Martin, born in April 2006, who is attending Brown University, per Page Six.
In March 2014, they separated, with their divorce finalizing in July 2016, but they’ve worked hard ever since then to ensure their children come first as they build a new, blended family.
Paltrow and Martin have both moved on with new partners since their divorce. The Iron Man star married producer Brad Falchuk in 2018, and Martin started dating actress Dakota Johnson in 2017, of whom Paltrow is a big fan.
