Adolescence Creator: “I went to places I wish I hadn’t gone to” While Creating the Netflix Hit

Adolescence is currently the hottest topic of discussion in pop culture. The brilliant one-take cinematography, intense drama, and the hard-hitting, relevant events shown in the Netflix hit have generated conversations all around.

The limited crime-drama series centers on the 13-year-old Jamie Miller, beautifully played by Owen Cooper, who is accused of stabbing and murdering a girl from his school. As the show progresses, it delves deeper into Jamie’s mindspace and unveils the dark and disturbing effects of social media on young minds.

Amidst Adolescence‘s success, Jack Thorne, who co-created the British crime drama along with Stephen Graham, confessed that he was deeply troubled while researching for his show.

Researching for Adolescence was not cakewalk for its creator

A primary reason behind Adolescence‘s critical acclaim is the way it handled the complicated modern issues so carefully. The 4-episode series addresses how the fragile teenage minds are easily manipulated by manosphere populists on the internet.

For those who are unversed about the dark side of the internet, the manosphere is an online realm of misogynist men who are strongly against women’s empowerment. They propagate the idea that feminists are making it difficult for men to succeed and are promoting widespread misandry.

Episode 3 of the show presented a very powerful moment between Owen Cooper‘s Jamie Millier and Erin Doherty’s psychologist Briony Ariston. It is one of the most intense TV scenes as Jamie aggressively lays out the chronology of the events that led him to take the disastrous step. Jamie claims that he is not an incel but looked into the topic as “everyone kept going on about it.”

In an interview with Wired, the co-creator of the show, Jack Thorne, claimed that researching for the show was not an easy task for him. He confessed that he was disturbed by tweens and teens openly wrote about their incel ideology on the internet.

I went very, very deep. I went to places I wish I hadn’t gone to.

It is not the only interview where Thorne has discussed the impact of Adolescence‘s research work. While talking to GQ Magazine, the creator shared that his algorithm was a mess” after reading about all that incel stuff. Jack Thorne looks deeply affected by the culture as he compares social media addiction to cigarettes, alcohol, and guns.

Can we expect another season of Adolescence?

Adolescence has not only been an insane critical hit, but the social media buzz has also helped it to rise atop the global streaming charts. Netflix reported that the show has amassed 96.7 million views to date and stands on the Top 10 list in all 93 countries.

Although the limited series felt like a complete story on its own, the makers may want to cash in on the success by making another season. Stephen Graham earlier told Tudum that they wanted to end the saga in Jamie’s bedroom, where the whole story began (as we saw in Episode 4).

However, the Eddie Miller actor and the co-creator of the show have a different opinion now. He spoke to Variety about the possibility of another season to expand the story, “We’ll see how the figures are. There’s the possibility of developing another story.”

Amelie Pease, who played the role of Jamie’s sister in the show, also voiced her support for another season in a chat with Cosmopolitan UK. While the potential need for a Season 2 is surely questionable, it may also be fruitful in showing the effects of Season 1’s events from a different angle. Or we might get to see a different story altogether. Only time will answer.

Adolescence can be streamed on Netflix.
