Meghan Markle Had a Steadfast Reaction to Being Called ‘Unrelatable’ After Her Show Backlash

Ever since she started dating her now-husband Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has been a major target for criticism. And while some attacks have been more substantial than others, there’s one recent opinion from haters that she just won’t let slide: that she’s “unrelatable.”

In a new interview with the New York Times, Markle, who seems luckily unaware of the backlash surrounding her new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, responded to those saying she’s “unrelatable and out of touch.”

Per the outlet, Markle kept her reaction short and sweet. “Don’t they know my life hasn’t always been like this?” she said, making a motion to show her sleeping dogs and the sweeping Montecito views around her.

In other words, sure, Markle’s perfectly poised lifestyle on the show might be a little far-fetched –with her collecting her own honey from her bees and making candles from scratch from their wax– but she knows that’s not entirely who she is or represents, let alone where she comes from. In fact, Markle has been open about not only the isolating struggles of being a royal during her time in the UK, but also of growing up middle-class in Los Angeles and struggling as an actress before landing her breakout role in Suits.

That was further exemplified when Markle reflected on her culinary journey over the years. “I’d go to Grandma Jeanette’s after school,” she said of her childhood. “She made the best after-school snack: Kraft grilled cheese on white Wonder bread,” Markle recalled. “All that butter.”

Fast-forward a few years, and she was discovering herself as a cook in an off-campus apartment while attending Northwestern University. “At 20, in a tiny little apartment in Evanston, serving that sandwich and a bottle of Two-Buck Chuck — that was when Trader Joe’s was getting big — we all thought it was so fancy,” she remembered.

But Markle isn’t reminding everyone of her not-so-glamorous upbringing for sympathy either; it’s a way for her to show the world, and perhaps her haters, who she truly is. She hasn’t always been the white-linen, salt-crusted-fish-making chef; she’s lived through a lot and worked hard to get where she is. So, yes, you might find her daily life now a little unrelatable, but she, herself, isn’t really.

Also the interview, she responded to haters who criticized her Le Creuset pans, claiming they were “too expensive for many Black women to afford and more ostentatious than traditional cast-iron.”

To that backlash, Markle was somewhat speechless. “This is a thing, in 2025?” she said, throwing her hands up in the air. “Everyone is coming in hot these days,” Markle’s mom, Doria Ragland, chimed in.

Luckily, that criticism of Markle hasn’t exactly landed with the internet. In fact, a quick search on social media shows countless Black women supporting Markle by showing off their very own Le Creuset pots and pans. “I did it for the culture,” one of those users wrote on TikTok. “Thank you, #MeghanMarkle for reminding the world via #Netflix that Black women don’t just aspire to luxury, we’ve BEEN living in it.”

Whether it’s Markle herself or her adoring fans, they’re paying no mind to the haters!
