Jinshi Was Dropping Hints of Being More Than Just a Prince or Eunuch Since ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Season 1

As The Apothecary Diaries season 2 continues airing, more and more secrets about the characters are coming to the forefront. One of the most integral characters of the show, Jinshi, has already been established to be much more than a simple eunuch. He has been trying to hide his identity all along.

However, hints at figuring out the character’s background have been scattered throughout the series. If one watches season 1 of the anime carefully, one would be able to figure out that Jinshi has always been different from other characters.

He never conformed to his status as a eunuch, much less that of a prince. Unfortunately, these hints were too subtle to be caught by most fans.

The Apothecary Diaries season 1 showed Jinshi’s interest in medical practices

In season 1, episode 19 of The Apothecary Diaries, Maomao successfully intercepts the assassination attempt of Jinshi. She was able to move Jinshi away from the falling pillar right on time. As a result, Jinshi was saved, but Maomao was brutally hurt by one of the guards before entering the ceremony premises.

After Jinshi was saved, he picked up the gravely injured Maomao and carried her outside. But he did not rush and kept his steps gentle but brisk. Many fans have questioned why Jinshi seemed to be in no hurry, especially when Maomao was hurt so badly. But the reason is that people who have injuries on their heads should not be jolted much.

That might be why Jinshi carried Maomao so gently, probably so that she would not harmed any further. He prioritized her stability over rushing everything and making things worse. This shows that Jinshi had prior medical knowledge, something that is not required of a eunuch or a prince. Jinshi probably learned about this by doing his own research.

Jinshi is proving himself to be more than an eunuch and a prince

In season 2, episode 11 of The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi saves Maomao by giving her CPR. If not for his quick thinking and skills, Maomao might not have survived. But CPR as a technique isn’t very easy and needs someone with basic medical knowledge to perform it. Jinshi’s successful usage of it means that he is somewhat trained in medicine and treatment.

Not just this, Jinshi has also shown interest in Maomao’s work from time to time. He has always been interested in knowing how the medicines that Maomao creates work or how the poisons that she loves come into effect. Every time Maomao explained something scientific to him, he listened with rapt attention.

This shows that Jinshi did not limit himself to his role as a eunuch or his real identity as a prince. He goes beyond his social standing and chosen profession to research anything and everything that seems useful. And this has greatly benefitted him in the long run.
