Devil May Cry Season 1: How Can Lady Finally Steal the Spotlight in the Netflix Series?

The Devil May Cry franchise has long captured the hearts of fans with its stylish combat and intricate lore. With Netflix’s new anime adaptation about to premiere soon, fans are excited to see how their beloved characters have been portrayed in it.

With the series being a fresh take on the lore of Devil May Cry, a particular character has the chance to finally steal the spotlight and reinvent herself. The character that we are referring to is Lady.

After being ignored by the previous anime adaptation and by the most recent games, Netflix can finally give her the chance to shine by placing her at the center of the show.

Who doesn’t remember Lady’s dynamic introduction in DMC 3? A bada** hunter who kills demons on sight, rides a sweet motorcycle and wields a weapon that seems completely impractical in a real fight.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening put Lady at the center of the plot with both her and Dante pursuing Arkham (for different reasons) while scaling the Temen-ni-gru.

Lady is crucial to the story of this game because Arkham, the man in cahoots with Vergil, is Lady’s father. He killed her mother in front of her when she was a child, and now she wishes to hunt him down and kill him for good. She even coins the phrase “Devil May Cry” at the end of the game (gosh, she’s cool).

Unfortunately, this was the last game where she was given such a crucial role. Devil May Cry 4 uses her as a device to forward the plot, while Devil May Cry 5 completely sidelines her from the plot.

Ever since DMC 3 ended, Lady has remained largely unimportant in Devil May Cry, with even the 2007 anime adaptation preferring to introduce her as “Dante’s Ex-Partner” rather than as her own character.

But with Netflix’s new Devil May Cry animated series, Lady can be put back in the spotlight. The story of the animated series is just perfect for it (Time for a theory).

It is pretty clear from all the trailers, sneak peeks (Hate them for spoiling stuff), and promotional material for the new series that the White Rabbit will serve as the primary antagonist. He is wielding the Force Edge and the Perfect Amulet, and it’s clear that he wishes to open the gate to hell.

This behavior of his is just like that of Arkham from the DMC 3 game. We think you guys can see where we are getting to. Just reveal that the White Rabbit is Arkham in disguise, and voila, you have a plot centered around Lady.

For those who don’t remember or don’t know, the White Rabbit already appeared in the DMC3 prequel manga. In that story, it was Arkham trying to manipulate Dante to steal his medallion. We don’t know if it will be the same character and plot.

But if you think that White Rabbit being Arkham is impossible, then let us tell you that while White Rabbit makes an appearance in the Devil May Cry 3 manga, it is later revealed that it was Arkham in disguise.

Discovering that her father is the sinister evil behind the recent demonic activity will reignite Lady’s childhood trauma, giving her a chance to grow past it while also allowing her to team up with the Devil Hunter Dante.

The turmoil that will take place inside Lady will allow for great character moments, and the plot will allow her to take the spotlight in the series.

I personally find this information shared by Adi Shankar aka the creator of the Devil May Cry Netflix anime really awesome:

Judging by what the series’ creator, Adi Shankar, has to say about Lady, this is where the series is headed.

Why Lady deserves the spotlight in Netflix’s Devil May Cry adaptation

In a series filled with demon-human hybrids fighting against other demon-human hybrids and full-blooded demons, Lady represents the values of human resilience and tenacity.

While Dante, Trish, and Vergil’s overpowered demon heritage might make us rest easy, Lady’s human nature provides the much-needed stakes to the story.

Unlike Vergil, who fights for power, and Dante, who is nonchalant, Lady is responsible and fights to prevent anyone else from suffering the same loss that she suffered as a child. Her sense of justice and moral compass in a world like Devil May Cry is truly refreshing to see.

Additionally, Lady has always had a unique chemistry with Dante. They bicker with each other on occasions but they continue to care for each other. This is something that Netflix can bank on instead of restricting her to the sidelines. The series can let Dante and Lady heal and develop each other.

The potential with Lady is limitless, and with the show pulling us back into a familiar narrative, it’s time to give her the spotlight she deserves. With her skills, emotional depth, and coolness, she has everything she needs to steal the show IF the show lets her.

Devil May Cry will be available to stream on Netflix from 3 April 2025.
