The Chainsaw Man anime has taken the world by storm, captivating everyone with its gory action and exhilarating narrative. With a movie on the horizon, fans worldwide are ready to witness MAPPA’s sleek action choreography and animation.
But this movie is not just about the action. The movie’s most important aspect is one of its characters: Reze. She stands out among everyone else for her impact on Denji, the protagonist of Chainsaw Man.

Who is this mysterious character, and what impact did she have on Denji? We’ve got you covered.
Chainsaw Man: Reze is innocent yet lethal

Reze is the perfect example of a femme fatale. When she first runs into Denji, she carries herself like a cute, innocent girl who is amused by his behavior. She tells him about her job at a small cafe and invites him over.
Once there, she leaves her shift to spend time with him and starts complimenting him. Denji takes it as a sign that “the chick” is totally into him (c’mon Denji, you cannot be serious).

However, beneath this portrayal of a cute and innocent waitress lies a secret that would flip the entire narrative. Reze isn’t your average barista; she is, in fact, the Bomb Devil. She was sent by the Soviet Union to assassinate the Chainsaw Man and steal his heart (literally).
This was her true mission, and seducing Denji was just her way of getting him to lower his guard. This is also the arc where we find out that perhaps Pochita isn’t just a cute little mascot.
Make no mistake, though. Reze is not just a really good actress, she is also a formidable fighter. As the Bomb Devil, her abilities stem from humanity’s fear of bombs. She can generate blasts that can level entire city blocks.
She can transform any part of her body into a deadly projectile and even excels at close-quarters combat, giving her an edge in both ranged and close combat.
While Reze’s character may seem simple enough after reading the above information, the fact of the matter couldn’t be farther away. Reze is perhaps one of the most complex characters in the Chainsaw Man story.

While one can chalk up her compliments towards Denji as a way to get close to him, it is later revealed that perhaps there was a bit of sincerity in her compliments.

She is a morally grey character who seems to care about Denji. Despite being on a mission to kill him, she asks him to run away with her. While the revelation about her true identity makes us think that she was manipulative, her revealing that she liked Denji seems to suggest otherwise.
Even after she was left alive and was supposed to meet Denji at the cafe, we never truly got to know her true feelings for him because of Makima’s interference. Thus, she remained an unsolved enigma to both us and Denji.
Reze’s impact on Denji and vice versa

While Reze is a formidable physical threat, no doubt, fans who have read the Chainsaw Man manga strongly believe that she is a far greater threat to one’s emotions and thinking. Reze is very manipulative and is a master of hiding her true intentions.
And while she does start to feel something real for him, her initial compliments were meant to lower his guard.
Her influence on Denji in Chainsaw Man is multi-layered. Up until her arrival, Denji is seen only as a weapon for killing devils. He is just the Chainsaw Man, not Denji. Knowing this, she appeals to his human side and treats him as a real person.
She comments on how she would love to team him to read and even remarks on the fact that Denji was a Devil Hunter, telling him that a boy his age shouldn’t have to go through such a dangerous profession.

She laughs at his jokes and while Denji is too dumb to see it (okay fine, he’s not dumb, he just can’t comprehend it), he is smitten by Reze. He is not just attracted to her physically, like he is with Makima. He likes her for treating him like a human.
Even at the end of the arc, when she doesn’t show up at the cafe (she dies thanks to Makima), it affects Denji. He thinks of her when he sees Aki drinking coffee and her betraying his love (according to him) is the reason why Denji gets closer to Makima, who doesn’t treat him like a human.
How would you describe Reze’s personality?

But while she was talking to Denji and getting him to trust her completely, she didn’t realize that she was opening herself up to him. She didn’t realize that their bond in Chainsaw Man is marked with vulnerability. She relates to him because they are similar, and his personality influences her.
She was supposed to assassinate him for her mission, but she found herself feeling something for him. Her mission, training, and feelings contradict each other, making her so complex that not even she was able to understand herself until she died.
Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc will be available in theatres from 29 October 2025.
