The recent trend of turning images and posts into Ghibli-style art has completely taken over the internet. While some people are happy and excited to follow the trend, hardcore anime fans understand how this eccentric trend hurts the legacy of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, one of the most legendary creators in the history of anime.
Miyazaki dedicated his life to creating some of the greatest anime movies that even won Oscars for him, and the one thing he was always against was using AI to create animation. In fact, he has expressed his hatred towards this ideology of Artificial Intelligence within the anime industry multiple times, and it is quite understandable from his point of view.

Thus, to tarnish Miyazaki’s legacy in such a way feels sad, and One Piece’s director, Migumi Ishitani has expressed her anger about the ongoing trend. She has used some harsh words against the trend followers who are essentially ruining the essence of Studio Ghibli and its founders who put their heart and soul into making it one of the greatest studios in the world.
The Studio Ghibli trend has taken over the internet
The unique animation of Studio Ghibli, which has given us some of the greatest anime movies like The Boy and the Heron, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo, has recently become wildly popular because of an ongoing trend. This trend involves transforming an image or a post into Ghibli art style using AI tools like ChatGPT.
It has been a global movement that every individual with a social media presence is following and actively participating in. From influencers to celebrities, everyone has joined the trend, and it hasn’t stopped growing. But the problem is that almost 90% of the people following this trend don’t even know about Studio Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki.
Miyazaki is one of the greatest minds of the anime industry and is a core believer in the fact that AI is not at all needed to create animation. This is why this ongoing trend is not only hurting his legacy but also disrespecting someone who has given 60 years to the art form.
One Piece director raises her voice against the trend
Many Japanese creators linked with the anime community have recently decided to raise their voices against the ongoing trend and the way it is hurting Studio Ghibli’s brand. One of them is Migumi Ishitani, the director of some of the greatest One Piece episodes, including the One Piece Fan Letter, which was one of the most unique One Piece stories.

Ishitani shared a bunch of tweets from her personal account on X, which addressed the current issue at hand about Ghibli taking action against the AI tools that are using its name and art style without permission.
ジブリを汚しやがって…許さん……
— 䂖谷牛乳 (@ishigyunyu) April 1, 2025
She even posted that the trend has tainted the Ghibli name, and she will never forgive the individuals who started the trend.
Ishitani’s tweets are justifiable as AI has ruined the industry in more than one way, and many animators and directors have lost their jobs because of it. The trend needs to end, and fans need to understand the true depth of Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki before following the Ghibli art style movement.
