John Cena might be done playing the face of WWE, but he has a new gig where he is the face that fans look up to. Cena is the new face of Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen, which comes with a tagline that plays on Cena’s catchphrase, “Sunscreen You Can’t See.”

The 16-time world champion and dermatologist Dr. Neera Nathan appeared in the promotional video to explain the innovative formula of the new sunscreen while also highlighting the importance of sun safety. Fans were shocked when Cena shared about his past skin cancer diagnosis.

John Cena isn’t just going to make his campaign for Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen funny. He has a story to share that highlights how crucial it is to use sun protection. Cena shared that he grew up in a small town next to Newburyport and Salisbury Beach and spent his summers at small carnivals and the beachside.

He shared that he “never” wore sunscreen, sharing that it was all new knowledge at the time. Cena shared that he moved from New England to Florida during his 20s, and it was at this time that he “fell in love with the sun.” His biggest mistake was that he was stubborn and didn’t have a skincare routine to protect himself.

He was just confident that he wouldn’t have to deal with the “problem”. However, he shared that the tons of exposure and minimal protection finally caught up with him. He explained his skin cancer diagnosis at this time, which was a shocking moment in his life. He explained (via PEOPLE):

I was stubborn. I didn’t want to have a routine and I also thought the problem would never reach me. And it’s one of those things where I had a ton of exposure with minimal protection and it caught up with me. It wasn’t until I went to a dermatologist and got a skin checkup and had a cancerous spot removed from my right pec.

Even though the cancerous spot on his chest was removed, his dermatologist informed him that he had to come back in. He shared that he had a great dermatologist who held him by the hand through this process. He shared that he had another spot removed close to his right shoulder a year later.

He shared, “It shows up like a white polka dot on the side of my chest and on my shoulder. If you watch WWE, you’ll be able to see them.” He shared that he was grateful that he could “dodge those two bullets” and added that he wore them as a reminder of, “Hey man, you need to take the extra few seconds to protect yourself every day.”

John Cena shared with PEOPLE that Neutrogena had no clue about his skin cancer diagnosis when they first came to him. He shared that the brand came to him because they had developed this “invisible” Ultra Sheer sunscreen, and they wanted “somebody who the world knows as invisible.” They wanted to lean in on the “You Can’t See Me” joke for the promotion.

Cena was all in for the idea. He shared, “And I really appreciate Neutrogena wanting to lean into it. The spots are very funny, and if you can make people laugh and send a message at the same time, that’s great.” It was only halfway through the campaign that Cena was “brave enough to share my story.”

He shared that the partnership had a deeper meaning for him, and he hoped to be a “mouthpiece” to get people to use Neutrogena sunscreen. He further shared that he never imagined himself as “the go-to person for a skincare campaign”.

He shared that he had the backing of a dedicated audience who made a very unlikely spokesperson like himself become the spokesperson for a skincare campaign. We will see the Cenation Leader in action at WrestleMania 41, where he will take on Cody Rhodes in a title card match.
