This year’s CinemaCon came with a lot of exciting updates for film fanatics, including the unveiling of some exclusive footage of David Corenswet’s Superman (2025). There is a ton of responsibility on the film’s shoulders; it is the first film coming out of James Gunn’s much-hyped renovation of the superhero universe. Just like Superman himself, the film will have to be out of this world to keep the fans believing in the magic of DCU.
There is an ongoing debate among comic book movie lovers about whether David Corenswet was the right choice for the lead role or not. While some are completely on the actor’s side, others believe that he probably would’ve been better off in a different role. The question is, what other DC character could he have played? Well, he sure has one in mind.

David Corenswet’s other dream DC role?

David Corenswet‘s term with DC Studios hasn’t even begun, and people already want to know if there is another character he would have enjoyed playing, maybe sometime in the future.
At the 2025 CinemaCon, Superman stars Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Rachel Brosnahan took the stage alongside director James Gunn and his co-chief Peter Safran to give the audience an extended look at their highly anticipated film.
While on stage, the cast was asked if they’d ever want to play other DC characters in their career, and they all had some interesting answers, to say the least (via THR).
Corenswet admitted that he’d love to play Batman in the future, stating, “That would be fun to get to do at some point, James, if you’re willing.” Looks like he wants the best of both worlds, huh?
Hoult replied more humorously, stating that he had auditioned for both main DC heroes but ended up getting to play Lex Luthor intended. He said, “Well, I auditioned for both Batman and Superman.” Hoult had previously auditioned to play Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022), and let’s just say that it wasn’t a pleasant time for the actor.
On Gunn’s offer to play the villainous Lex Luthor, Hoult recalled thinking, “Sh*t, that’s who I was supposed to be playing all along.” Judging by what we have seen so far, Hoult sure fits into the picture like the perfect puzzle piece.
As for Brosnahan, who is playing Lois Lane, she has a rather unconventional “dream” DC role – Lex Luthor. She’s even willing to shave her head for it!
Nicholas Hoult had auditioned to play Superman

While Hoult clearly makes an incredible Lex Luthor, there was a time when the actor had his sight set on the Kryptonian superhero. During an appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Hoult revealed that he had auditioned to play Superman as he was pretty “excited” about what Gunn “was building at DC.”
He remembered having a conversation with the team, who was well aware of his rough Batman audition story. He said, “They didn’t want me to necessarily have to go through [the Batman] process. That was very kind of them. There was an element of them being like, ‘We like you as an actor. We want you to be in this world.”
On the podcast, Hoult revealed that he had an “inkling” while reading Superman‘s script that he’d have a good time playing Lex. Later, when Gunn called him up to offer the role, it was like everything fit into place. His reaction? He “cackled”!
I think he said, ‘We want you to play Lex,’ and I just laughed, because I think there was something in my instinct, when I first read the script, where I was like, ‘I think that’s more what I should be doing in this story.’
Through auditions and casting decisions, it seems like everyone ended up exactly where they were meant to be. With Corenswet leading the ensemble with the red cape on, Hoult embracing his inner genius for Lex, and Brosnahan bringing the much-loved Lois Lane to life, Superman just might be worth all the hype!
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
