Syria’s interim government, led by President Ahmed al-Shara has formally demanded Russia hand over ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad for trial.
Al-Shara warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that failure to comply could jeopardize Russia’s military bases in Syria. Assad fled to Russia in December 2024 after rebels toppled his regime, ending his decades-long rule.
Saudi state media Al Arabiya reported on March 22, 2025, that Al-Shara sent an official request to Putin, stressing Syria’s determination to bring Assad to justice on its soil. “Syrians want his presence here to proceed with the trial,” Al-Shara stated.
Assad’s 14-year civil war reign left over 600,000 dead fueling the new government’s urgency to hold him accountable. After his ouster on December 8, 2024, Assad escaped via plane to Russia, where he remains.
Al-Shara’s ultimatum ties Assad’s extradition to Russia’s interests. He promised Moscow could oversee its Syrian air and naval bases—Hmeimim and Tartus—if Assad returns. Otherwise, their security faces risks.
Russia lost control of these strategic Mediterranean assets after Assad’s fall. Tartus supports Russia’s naval presence while Hmeimim aids operations across Africa. Regaining influence drives Moscow’s current efforts.
Syria’s new rulers aim to address years of oppression under Assad. International media suggest Russia backs stability in Syria—Putin expressed this hope in a March 20 message to Al-Shara. Yet Reuters, citing Russian sources claims Moscow may resist extradition. Putin’s stance remains unclear as of the latest updates.
