As questions continue to arise surrounding the death of 14-year-old Miller Gardner, a Costa Rican forensic pathologist exclusively spoke to Us Weekly about what could have caused the tragedy. Authorities initially believed food poisoning may have contributed to Miller’s death in Costa Rica, but high levels of carbon monoxide were later found in his hotel room. According to Dr. Maikel Vargas-Sanabria, a professor at the University of Costa Rica, symptoms of “regular food poisoning” can be “realistically” confused with carbon monoxide poisoning. “The food poisoning would have to be an anaphylactic-type reaction — in other words, fulminant — involving something the person is highly allergic to, like peanuts or other allergens,” Vargas-Sanabria told Us. The doctor described carbon monoxide poisoning as “chemical asphyxiation,” which can cause drowsiness and seizures within minutes.
