The Mass Effectprotagonist is delivered to players as the sole person destined to solve the existential perils that threaten the survival of organic life across planets and solar systems. Without Shepard, literally nothing gets accomplished. There would be no hero to rally the galaxy, no one to make tough calls, and no one to stop the Reapers. Without Shepard, the cycle simply continues.
