Jensen Ackles on Demon Dean: “I would have loved to stretch that out longer” in Supernatural

Jensen Ackles played Dean Winchester in all fifteen seasons of Supernatural. The series followed Dean and his brother Sam Winchester on their monster-hunting escapades, which take them to hell and back multiple times.

In the series, Ackles played slightly altered versions of Dean sporadically across different seasons. One of the most popular alternate versions of Dean came in the show’s tenth season, wherein Ackles played “Demon Dean.”

While the Demon Dean subplot lasted only a handful of episodes, it was extremely well-received among the fans. As a result, it isn’t a surprise that even Ackles enjoyed playing this version and wished it had lasted longer. Here is what Ackles had to say about Demon Dean in Supernatural.

Jensen Ackles wished he had played Demon Dean longer in Supernatural

Jensen Ackles first appeared as Dean Winchester in the pilot episode of Supernatural that aired in 2005. Over the years, Ackles played slightly different versions of the character in the series, including Demon Dean in the show’s tenth season.

After the Mark of Cain was placed on Dean, he became a demon who served as the Knight of Hell. The storyline lasted a handful of episodes in the tenth season before the normal version returned to the forefront.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ackles reflected on his time as Demon Dean, which was extremely well-received and popular among the fans.

I did love Demon Dean, and I would have loved to stretch that out longer.

Ackles made the above statement, admitting that like the fans, even he enjoyed this version of Dean. However, Ackles also noted that while the regular Dean was back that did not mean Demon Dean was gone. While Ackles’ comments suggested that this version would return, things ultimately did not pan out.

In the same interview, Ackles also talked about the approach to the Demon Dean character, who was drastically different from his regular version. Despite witnessing aggressive demons in the earlier seasons, Dean himself was much more casual and easy-going when he turned into one.

He didn’t have to bear it anymore, so instead of being some maniacal, angry, gritted-teeth kind of a snarling demon, he was carefree and loved life.

Ackles made the above statement, explaining that his character’s traumatic past and resulting guilt frequently held him back. However, the Demon version of the character was free from any such inhibitions while also providing a stark contrast from the regular version, which he described as “Clean Dean.”

Ultimately, Demon Dean’s fun-loving and easy-going approach struck a chord with the viewers, which is why the character was so popular. After seeing Ackles being needlessly tortured by the larger conflicts of the series, fans enjoyed seeing a more casual take on the character, proving why Demon Dean is still very popular.

Supernatural is streaming on Netflix.
