“His storytelling disappeared when Costner left”: ‘1923’ Season 2 Has Convinced Me What Made Yellowstone Great That Paramount Refuses to Accept

Okay, hear me out – 1923 season 2’s officially opened my eyes to what made the 2018 neo-Western drama TV series Yellowstone so great. And guess what? It wasn’t really the drama, the family feuds, or the horses. Nope, it was the brilliant storytelling that totally disappeared when 70-year-old Kevin Costner left the scene.

1923’s got this magic where it nails the grit and heart of the Duttons, making me wonder why Paramount can’t just admit the truth: Costner’s absence is glaring, and it’s killing the damn vibe. I’m convinced now more than ever – Yellowstone’s charm was in the storytelling, not just the chaos.

Kevin Costner’s exit = Taylor Sheridan’s decline: Is 1923 Season 2 proof of it?

“His storytelling disappeared when Costner left,” said one Reddit fan. And honestly, could not agree more. Yellowstone was gripping when three-time Golden Globe award winner Kevin Costner was front and center. But the moment he stepped back, everything was a mess. And 1923 Season 2’s proving me right.

If Paramount had any smarts, they would’ve handed Costner the reins as lead producer instead of trusting the American writer, actor, producer, and director Taylor Sheridan to solo this thing.

1923 S2 is dragging so hard, I’m thinking of throwing in the towel on any future Sheridan projects. Anyone else just… over it? Like, can we stop pretending the S&M subplot is doing anything other than hitting the ‘what’s the point’ button over and over?

62-year-old Jerome Patrick Flynn (best known as Bronn in the HBO fantasy series, Game of Thrones) spilled the tea, casually mentioning that Sheridan didn’t even bother showing up to set. In an interview with Radio Times, Flynn said,

Taylor’s so busy working on the plethora of other stuff that’s coming through him. No, we never saw him on set.

Ah, I get it. So many projects, so little time.

The English actor and singer also mentioned that Sheridan had full trust in Ben Richardson, the primary director. Richardson, who handled 1883 and 1923’s first season, was likely given the reins to guide 1923’s second season to the finish line.

But let’s face it. The 54-year-old writer should’ve been the captain of this ship, not watching it from the dock. The show’s meant to be a flagship in his empire, and instead, it’s limping toward a lackluster finale.

If 1923 doesn’t stick the landing, this entire Sheridan-driven universe might implode under its own weight. Who’s with me?

Fans lose patience: Is Taylor Sheridan spreading himself too thin?

Fans are throwing in the towel on 1923 S2, feeling let down and scratching their heads. The show’s quality took a nosedive, and many are pointing the finger at Sheridan for juggling too many projects. Some are sticking around just to see how it wraps up, but they’re not impressed.

With fans voicing their frustration louder than ever, it’s clear that TS’s empire is starting to crumble. 1923 missed its shot, and the magic of Yellowstone feels like a distant memory. Viewers are wary about what’s next, hoping for a comeback but unsure if they’re ready to sign up for another letdown.

Watch 1923 on Paramount Plus and Yellowstone on Peacock.
