Why was Kim Delaney arrested and charged?

Hollywood is no stranger to scandals and lawsuits, yet the industry never leaves an opportunity to turn heads and raise eyebrows when familiar faces like Kim Delaney land in trouble. Yes, the Chicago Fire actress—who charmed audiences as Jennifer Sheridan, mother to the lead star Taylor Kinney’s character Kelly Severide—is making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

While the actress is supposed to be on the news for new projects and her onscreen performance, Delaney made headlines for being arrested following an explosive altercation with her partner, James Morgan. TMZ recently broke the news, reporting that Delaney and Morgan were involved in a domestic dispute that quickly escalated into physical assault, leading to police intervention.

It was reported that early on Saturday, March 29, Delaney and Morgan started off with a verbal fight, which snowballed into a physical fight, leading Morgan to be charged with misdemeanor domestic violence. Whereas for Delaney, law enforcement sources noted that the actress was charged with felony assault for allegedly causing great bodily injury to her partner.

Police were called to the couple’s Los Angeles-area home, along with paramedics, to check both the actress and her boyfriend for signs of injury. After the duo were medically cleared, they were then taken into custody by police. According to People, a spokesperson confirmed that Delaney was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, and both of them are due to appear in court on Tuesday, April 1.

While Kim Delaney has found herself under a controversial spotlight, this isn’t the first time she has faced legal troubles. According to reports, the actress seems to have a history of previous run-ins with the law. But now, her latest arrest seems to raise questions about her turbulent past and what lies ahead. With both Delaney and James Morgan awaiting trial, fans await further updates.

History of Kim Delaney’s former arrests and scandals

Meanwhile, Kim Delaney, famously known for playing the mother of Taylor Kinney‘s Kelly Severide on Chicago Fire, has had her fair share of legal troubles. Despite gaining popularity for her stellar performances on screen—after rising to fame during the 80s with the soap opera All My Children—Delaney has faced DUI charges and even went through rehab for her troubling behavior.

According to Hello Magazine, tracing back to 2002, Delaney was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, as she refused to take a breathalyzer. Pulled over after exhibiting erratic driving behavior and refusing to cooperate with the police, Delaney was arrested. Thereafter, she pleaded no contest in court and was ultimately sentenced to 2 years of probation.

By 2003, Delaney checked herself into a rehab center and tried getting her struggles with alcohol under control. However, within a few years, the actress found herself in hot water again, in 2005, when she was again arrested for another DUI while endangering the life of her son, who was with her in the car. Following this incident, the actress lost custody of her only child to her ex-husband Joseph Cortese.

When her 15-year-old son (back then) was asked to testify in court, he stated that it wasn’t the first time he had seen his mother drunk. However, after she lost her son and was subject to rehab, Delaney’s condition didn’t improve any further. In fact, she was escorted off stage at a Liberty Medal Award ceremony in 2011 after she appeared to be delivering a rambling speech, possibly under the influence of alcohol.

Although Kim Delaney wasn’t arrested after this event, this incident further solidified her reputation for struggling with substance abuse. Later on, in 2022, once again, reports surfaced of the actress being sued for an alleged hit-and-run, possibly under the influence of alcohol. It was reported that the former NYPD Blue star had fled the scene after hitting a man with her car.

And now, after decades of lawsuits, arrests, and a long list of felonies, Kim Delaney has returned to the headlines for her recent altercation with her partner, James Morgan, in 2025. Although details are still emerging about this case, now that the duo are set to appear in court, netizens are wondering whether this is another bump in the road or a sign of deeper troubles.

Although Delaney’s career has seen incredible highs, from Emmy wins to starring in some of the biggest TV shows, her off-screen struggles seem to be deteriorating over the years. With her recent arrest, many are hoping she gets the help she needs rather than spiraling further.
