The new animated series for Devil May Cry is just two days away, and fans, old and new, couldn’t be more excited. Adi Shankar has put his heart and soul into the project and Netflix has a reputation to live up to after the success of Arcane and the Castlevania series.
This animated series also has the unique opportunity to expand on the emotional impact of Eva’s character beyond what we’ve seen in video games. We already know she is the reason why Dante and Vergil’s paths became disconnected.

Netflix’s Devil May Cry needs to give her a bigger role to make the conflict between the brothers much more emotional, and there might be hope for this. In the latest sneak peek, Dante experienced flashbacks of their childhood. Could it be hinting at an exploration of Eva’s story?
Who was Eva? The one who shaped Dante and Vergil’s paths in Devil May Cry
Eva was Dante and Vergil’s mother and the human wife of Sparda, a demon. Her death at the hands of demons became the source of the brothers’ conflict since they both adopted contrasting ideologies. While Vergil embraced his demonic heritage and got stronger, Dante refused and sought revenge for her.

Most of what we know is through Dante’s perspective. According to him, Eva was kind and fierce. She was also loyal and devoted to Sparda. We know little of their relationship so Netflix’s Devil May Cry needs to explore this too, like they did with Dracula and Lisa in Castlevania.
Could Netflix’s Devil May Cry finally show the full story of Eva’s death?
Eva sacrificed her life for Dante and Vergil when Mundus’ forces attacked the Sparda Manor. She hid the former in the closet while she went looking for the latter, caring little about what could’ve happened to her.
This caused Dante’s hatred for all demons, including his father, despite what Eva said about him. Vergil, however, embraced it, and this caused the brothers to hate each other. We don’t get the full details of what they did to Eva, nor do we fully understand why Dante resents Sparda.
If Netflix’s series shows us Eva’s perspective, it would make Dante and Vergil’s conflict all the more emotional. Both of them believe she favored one over the other when neither is true.
The sneak peek titled Brothers gave us glimpses of Dante’s childhood when he saw Vergil. It possibly depicts the night she died, but this is again through his perspective. It needs to show Eva’s story.
How Eva’s death could deepen the emotional stakes in Netflix’s Devil May Cry
In the sneak peek, when Dante saw “Vergil,” his overconfidence faltered with flashbacks of Eva and their childhood. They were separated after Eva had died so he believed his brother had died too.

Dante’s shock was genuine. We don’t know what Adi Shankar has added yet, but hopefully, it will explore Eva and the effect she’s had on them. Perhaps we will find out why she died early on so that the conflict between the brothers makes sense to new fans who have never heard of the games.
Overall, Eva’s influence on the story runs too deep. This is a gold mine for Netflix to make Dante and Vergil’s story more emotional. It certainly benefits new and old fans of Devil May Cry alike.
Devil May Cry is out on April 3, 2025, on Netflix.
