Firefighters on the Plumas National Forest Feather River Ranger District plan to start pile burning operations tomorrow near Challenge, conditions permitting.
Approximately 1 acre of piles are planned to be burned at the Challenge Work Center, with ignitions expected Tuesday.
If conditions remain within prescription, firefighters plan to treat approximately 38 acres of piles along Challenge Grade, east of the community towards Pike County Fire Lookout. Ignitions are expected to take place Tuesday and Wednesday. If conditions are good, there may be additional pile burning ignitions in the project area later in the week.
The piles are hand piles located near the community of Challenge, including area residences, and along La Porte Road. The pile burning operations in Challenge are part of ongoing critical fuel reduction work for community protection.
Smoke is expected to be visible from Challenge, Woodleaf, Clipper Mills and the surrounding area, but is not expected to have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities.
Short duration, minor smoke impacts are expected in Challenge, along La Porte Road and neighboring forest roads. Visibility on roads in the project area may be reduced, especially early in the morning and late evening as smoke settles.
There will be increased firefighting equipment traffic in the area. Drivers should use caution, watch for fire equipment exiting and entering area roadways, and possible slow traffic.
