“I hated it”: Stan Lee Despised One of the Most Tragic Deaths in Spider-Man Comics History

Veteran comic book writer Stan Lee was known for his radical views and take on the Marvel characters which were created by him. Although he was the creator of these characters, there were some issues about their rights.

Some of the storylines were taken in other directions by writers which weren’t affiliated with Stan Lee. Naturally, some things happened in the comic books that felt like a huge loss for the Excelsior.

Stan Lee hated this one character death in the Spider-Man comics

We all know what’s coming, right? Spider-Man didn’t. His love, Gwen Stacy, unfortunately died in the Marvel Comics (as well as its subsequent adaptations), and Peter Parker was forever changed.

Although there was a slight deviation in how the movie showed Gwen Stacy falling to her death and how the comic books portrayed her death, the point was that Peter Parker’s love was dead, and there was nothing he could do about it.

The storylines became darker, the guilt inside Parker’s mind made him do some terrible things, and it was eating him away. All in all, the comics took a dark turn for Peter Parker. In an interview way back in 1978, legendary comic book writer Stan Lee talked about how the death of Gwen Stacy felt like a personal loss to him as well (via The Comics Journal).

If they all try to follow my style, the stories might get a little bit tiresome after a while. But from a personal point of view, of course, I hated it on television when they changed the origins of two characters. I hated it when Conway killed Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man. I hated it.

However, it’s not all bad since there were some good moments from that interview as well. Being a veteran writer and having created hundreds of iconic characters, Stan Lee had it all.

So when talk came of his characters and what his favorite ones were, Lee had quite a tough time deciding. The excelsior did come up with an answer, and it was quite unexpected.

Stan Lee named his favorite characters and storyline

As the interview continued, Stan Lee was asked about his favorite creation in the comic books. Although he dilly-dallied for a while, Lee went on to name a particular storyline from the Fantastic 4 comic books as his favorite.

During the interview, the writer revealed that he often gets asked about the Galactus storyline in his comic books. Lee mentioned that he loved the Silver Surfer character and the whole Galactus incident.

You may remember we did a story in the Fantastic Four with Galactus and it introduced the Silver Surfer, and I’ve been asked about that so much that that’s the first one that comes to mind.

He continued,

So I would have to say that’s my favorite. But in all honesty, I don’t even remember it that well. You know, I’d have to go back and re-read it.

And although Stan Lee named the Silver Surfer storyline as one of his finest, millions of fans agree that the comic book writer has a plethora of stories which are equally awesome.

Although the death of Gwen Stacy may have changed Peter Parker, at least we got an emotional redemption for Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The 2021 film is available to stream on Disney+.
