Bob Dylan’s Beef With Woody Allen Explained: Why Did Bob Dylan Want to Beat Up the Disgraced Director?

Following the success of the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, many fans are surely discovering more details about the famed musician, and one of the shocking information they have certainly found out was his alleged beef with filmmaker Woody Allen.

It’s been a long time since Dylan made a startling statement about the veteran director, who was embroiled in a disgraceful controversy following his marriage to Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow, Allen’s former girlfriend.

Bob Dylan allegedly hated Woody Allen so much that he vowed to smack him in the face

It’s no secret that Bob Dylan displayed bouts of aggression throughout his career. Whether this was something innate in him or a coping mechanism to deal with the pressure of Hollywood fame, we don’t know, but we do know that he had once threatened to punch Woody Allen in the face.

During the mid-1960s, Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones went to a party when Dylan approached him out of the blue in the bathroom and, without a warning, told him that if Allen was around, he would attack him with all his might. As revealed in the book Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones by Paul Trynka, Dylan allegedly said:

You know what I’d do if Woody Allen was here? Punch him in the face, knock his glasses off, and tread on them.

Wow, this statement absolutely reeks of anger. Jones’ friend, Prince Stash Klossowski de Rola, confirmed that Dylan was truly way out there. He said the musician would corner someone, jab his finger on their chest, and start a scathing speech. “He’d have these passing whims, like a hatred of Woody Allen…” he added.

It was never found out why Dylan said those statements against Allen, but close friends of the famed singer said he started displaying this attitude when he became super famous. He would reportedly isolate himself to protect his privacy, which is understandable, but other times would allegedly lash out at his pals. It’s worth noting, though, that around this time, he suffered from drug addiction, as revealed in a 1966 interview.

In the same period, Allen was making waves in Hollywood as a stand-up comedian and, later on, as a filmmaker. It’s not unlikely that Dylan may have randomly poured his anger at the director, given how popular he has become due to his movies.

Allen was already a controversial figure back in the day. Apparently, Dylan was not the only person who expressed extreme dislike for the filmmaker. Orson Welles once said (via Esquire): “I hate Woody Allen… That particular combination of arrogance and timidity sets my teeth on edge.”

Even Mia Farrow’s ex-husband, Frank Sinatra, wanted Allen to be “taken out”. According to Daily Mail, he was furious about the director’s behavior and the s*xual abuse allegations leveled against him by Farrow involving her other adopted daughter.

If Dylan did not clarify why he wanted to smack Allen, these two personalities have made their reasons explicitly clear.
