Grandad ‘attacked’ at Celtic v Hearts clash over ‘pro-Israel badge’

COPS have launched a probe after a grandad was assaulted at a recent game at Celtic Park.

It’s understood the attack involved a fan wearing a pro-Israel badge.

The incident occurred during Celtic‘s 3-0 victory over Hearts on Saturday, March 29, which saw a trio of first-half goals — one from Jota and two from Maeda — seal an early win against the Jambos.

Officers are now looking into the assault of a 54-year-old man, who was reportedly wearing the badge in support of Israel during the game.

The man was assessed at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed that their inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Glasgow Friends of Israel later posted on social media platform X, claiming that the victim had obtained the pin from their stall, usually located in the city centre.

The tweet read: “A grandfather was assaulted by two thugs at the @CelticFC game yesterday because he was wearing a pro-#Israel badge he had collected from our stall.

“Like many thousands of Celtic fans, he supports the football team but is against terrorism. Police Scotland is involved.”

At present, the incident is not being treated as a hate crime.

A Police Scotland spokesperson stated: “Officers are investigating the assault of a 54-year-old man during the Celtic v Hearts match on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

“The man was checked over at the scene and did not require hospital treatment. Inquiries are ongoing.”

In a previous incident, Celtic fans unfurled an anti-Zionist banner during the club’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

In October 2023, several Palestine flags were also flown during a 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid, alongside a banner — despite the club urging fans to refrain from such displays.

UEFA took action afterward, fining Celtic £15,000 for what they described as a “provocative message of an offensive nature.”

Last month, former Celtic player Eyal Berkovic launched a scathing attack on Celtic fans and Ireland, accusing supporters of his former club of harboring “crazy hatred.”

Celtic Football Club have been approached for comment.
