Mile High Century Ride Cancelled Due to Extensive Roadwork Challenges

The Almanor Recreation and Park District reports that, after weeks of discussions with the California Department of Transportation, Hat Creek Construction and ride coordinators throughout Northern California, organizers have made the difficult decision to forego holding the Mile High Century Ride scheduled for June 14.

The district said planned roadwork in the area is extensive, with pavement sections being torn up in 1.5-mile segments. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict in advance which sections will be under construction at the time of the ride, and the road conditions will not be acceptable during this period, say organizers. Additionally, traffic controls will remain in place even on weekends when no active construction is underway.

“We explored alternate routes, but none provided the necessary combination of safety, minimal traffic, appropriate distances and the breathtaking experience of riding around our beautiful lake,” said organizers. “Given these challenges, we believe postponing the ride is the best course of action to ensure a top-quality event that upholds the standards our riders expect.”

APRD said its focus now shifts to bringing the Mile High Century Ride back in 2026 — better than ever — when cyclists can enjoy newly paved roads and a “spectacular riding experience.”
