Nathan Fillion is reflecting on his DC role in James Gunn’s Superman, and the actor believes that his character does not have the best reputation among fans. The actor is set to portray Guy Gardner, an abrasive galactic peacekeeper in the Green Lantern Corps, in the upcoming DC film.
However, while he sees his character as somewhat unlikable, fans don’t simply view him as bad; rather, they believe that the very qualities that make Guy Gardner abrasive are also what make him appealing.

Nathan Fillion believes no one likes his Superman character, Guy Gardner
Guy Gardner is a Green Lantern known for his unshakable confidence, brash attitude, and machismo, among other things. Nathan Fillion, who is playing the character in the upcoming Superman reboot, appears to have a deep understanding of his character.
Talking about his character with TV Guide, he said, “He’s a jerk!” while describing him as fearless, overconfident, and not very nice. However, The Rookie star seems to be less familiar with the character’s dedicated fandom.

In a recent interview with Jennifer Hudson, Fillion reflected on how he landed the role in James Gunn’s Superman and his character, noting that he is playing the Green Lantern that nobody likes.
He said on The Jennifer Hudson Show,
I am going to be Guy Gardner… a Green Lantern, the one nobody likes.
However, the show host reassured him that people would like the character, especially with Fillion in the role. While the character may have some unlikable traits, fans still love him far more than the actor seems to realize.
Fans really love Guy Gardner for being the “jerk” that he is
First appearing in Green Lantern #59, Guy Gardner is known for his brash, loud-mouthed, and rebellious personality. And fans couldn’t disagree more with Nathan Fillion’s remarks about Guy Gardner being the Green Lantern that nobody likes.

While many find his personality overbearing, for being unapologetically flawed and often abrasive, it’s also what makes him a beloved character. “He is the lovable as*hole archetype,” one fan said on Reddit, arguing that though he might come across as unlikable, he still has a “heart of gold.”
Many others also expressed how they love and appreciate his willingness to embrace his quirks and vulnerabilities and for not being afraid to be himself, even when it means being a bit obnoxious or self-centered.
While there is certainly a lot that makes him an unpleasant character, it would be unfair to simply call him an unlikable Green Lantern, as beneath his rough exterior lies the heart of a true hero, making him one of the best in the Corps.
And that’s exactly why fans love him, his unwavering confidence, his fearless honesty, and his refusal to back down from what he believes in, no matter what.
Superman is set to release on July 11, 2025.
