Netflix and Adi Shankar’s Devil May Cry is set to premiere in a few days, and the promotional materials that the team has released, such as its trailer and songs, have garnered a lot of attention from the audience.
While it is obvious that ardent fans of the franchise will tune in to watch the show, there will also be several people who will pick up the show without having played the games.

Here are 3 pivotal moments from the franchise that they need to know before the Netflix premiere.
1. Dante’s Awakening and clash with Vergil from Devil May Cry 3

Dante, the protagonist of Devil May Cry is the son of the legendary Dark Knight Sparda, and Eva, a human. Well, to be honest, he is one of the sons of Sparda, since he has a twin brother, Vergil. During their childhood, when their mother died in a demon attack, Dante assumed Vergil to have died as well.
He would be in for the surprise of a lifetime when it was revealed in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening that the elder son of Sparda was alive.
Happy family reunions aren’t exactly what the franchise is known for, so when Vergil stabs Dante through the chest and takes away his half of the perfect amulet, no one is surprised.
This, however, would be a bad move since it triggers Dante’s awakening, helping him unlock his Devil Trigger. This would also cement the rivalry between the brothers, giving way to several awesome fights.

Now, why exactly should one know about this moment? The new series seems to be going the same route, with White Rabbit being in cahoots with Vergil and using the power of the perfect amount.
This suggests that the series might have a moment similar to the game where Dante unlocks a new power when facing his brother.
2. Dante’s confrontation with Mundus from Devil May Cry 1

Confused to see DMC 1 being referenced after DMC 3? Well, we are going according to the timeline, so get used to it. In his first canonical appearance, Dante did several things. He ate pizza, met a clone of his mother, and yes, defeated the Demon King, Mundus.
For additional context, Mundus trapped his daddy in Hell and killed his mum (a classic Shonen plot).
The events of DMC 1 culminate in a face-off between Dante and the Demon King, where he decides to embrace his demonic heritage and takes down Mundus in a cathartic event. Not only did this moment show off Dante’s power, but it also set the standard for future battles in the franchise.
This moment is important because it shows us that while Dante may be portrayed as a nonchalant hunter on the outside, deep inside, he is tormented by his past, and defeating Mundus helped him come to terms with it.

This was the iconic battle that made the franchise popular, and it allowed Trish to join Dante on his future demon-hunting adventures.
3. The Sparda Family and the ending of Devil May Cry V

No one would have expected a series like Devil May Cry to have an ending based on family, but it sure does make sense. A series that starts with the breaking up of a family ends with the concept of a family being front and center of the plot.
The plot revolves around Dante, Vergil (you’ve heard of them), and Nero (this one you haven’t heard of), and revelations are made about Vergil and Nero’s connection.
While the overarching plot of the game is still about gaining power (Vergil is in it, duh), by the end of it, it is revealed that Nero is Vergil’s son, thus making him Dante’s nephew and Sparda’s grandson.
The game ends with Vergil and Dante seemingly reconciling with each other and traveling to the underworld to seal it off. They leave Nero as the protector of the human world and talk about their childhood while battling in the underworld.
While this ending and moment may seem out of context for a franchise like DMC that is all about hacking and slashing enemies with stylish combos, it represents the evolution of the series from a tale of isolated vengeance to one with redemption and the enduring bonds of blood.
While all these moments may not seem like much when you look at them individually, when you look at them from a character development perspective, they chart Dante’s journey from a nonchalant youth to a well-rounded demon hunter.
Devil May Cry will be available to stream on Netflix from 3 April 2025.
