Thousands of Irish warned ‘you can get SUNBURNED in April’ amid Easter hol fears & ‘sunshine for all’ 10-day forecast

SPRING weather is officially among us and with that comes a warning over sunscreen.

Parents in particular are being warned to lather up on the UV-blocker as temperatures soar this week and Ireland is treated to blue skies.

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly revealed that there is only a small chance of rain heading our way over the next 10 days.

And although temperatures are expected to max out at around 18C, the weather boffin has warned punters that high UV rays mean you can still get sunburned in April.

He explained: “We have high pressure which is going to basically keep all of the wind and rain away from Ireland for at least the next week in general.

“Now there is a small chance of a shower on the south coast on Thursday but generally it’s going to be a very dry and sunny week so lots of sunshine.

“You can get sunburned in April, as anybody that was out in the garden at the weekend on Sunday will have woke up this morning to realise, especially if you’re exposed to sun for a long period.”

While temperatures will remain in the mid-teens or even the high-teens further inland, the UV rays poking through can still be dangerous for our skin.

O’Reilly admitted that temperatures “won’t be exceptional” but warned they “will be getting higher” over the next few days as he pinpointed the exact areas that can expect the best of the warmth.

He said: “The east coast and the southeast will be cooler because of a light easterly breeze, a southeast breeze even.

“So you know if you were heading to the east coast for the beach you’d still want your jumper.

“Inland, it will be quite pleasant and we could see temperatures at places like Shannon or Athenry getting up to maybe 17C or 18C during the week.

“There will be sunshine for all. It’s just that breeze will keep it a little bit cooler in the east.”

UV rays are what cause skin to burn, and it is important to ensure you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays.

EASTER HOL ALERT

Alan said: “It won’t be that high temperatures but the UV, even at this time of the year when you get like long sunny days you know you can still get sunburned.

“Obviously it’s not as strong as it would be in the summer but you can get sunburned. I know I’m talking to some people that were sunburned already yesterday.”

He went on to warn parents that keeping topped up on the sunblock is especially important for children as the Easter holidays approach.

He added: “It is something to be wary of especially with children. Now you know this will last a week. it does look like staying dry into next week.

“But how long into next week is a little bit uncertain yet because I have some parents worrying that if this week is fine, next week is fine, does that mean it’s going to rain for the Easter holidays when the children are off school?

“But it’s just too early to know yet I’m afraid. It does look like very little if any rain for most of Ireland for the next 10 days.”
