Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries has made a prominent place in Jinshi’s heart. This became even more apparent after the situation the two found themselves in during the last two episodes of the series’ ongoing second season.
At the same time, though, some fans are yet again questioning whether Maomao’s feelings for Jinshi are genuine or if they fall short of how she feels about poisons. The answer to that, though, lies in the question itself, and I’m here to explain that to you.

Maomao’s love for poisons is what makes her love for Jinshi shine brightly
Maomao, the protagonist of The Apothecary Diaries is no less than an enigma. A genius apothecary with stunted emotional intelligence, she makes for one of the most paradoxical anime protagonists ever. While she had worked hard to keep things orderly in her life for this very reason, her life in the rear palace has been anything but that.
Not only has she garnered the attention of the high consorts, but also the Royal family. Namely the Empress Dowager, the Emperor, as well as the Crown Prince, Ka Zuigetsu, aka Jinshi. Their blooming romance has been one of the integral aspects of this masterpiece of a series since the beginning, and honestly, it is my favorite aspect of it as well.
Although most of the time it gets hidden behind all the mystery, court politics, and, well, frankly Maomao’s denial, it has been evident enough that even naysayers have turned around by now. However, Maomao, being Maomao, doesn’t make it easy to understand just how deep her feelings for Jinshi truly are.
Although it might stem from the fact that she isn’t all that connected to her emotions, something she admitted to in the latest episode, the fact remains the same. Such a conflict arose again in Episode 12 of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, when Maomao shut down Jinshi’s attempts to tell her the truth about his identity completely, not once but twice.
The second time, of course, was due to her finally getting those prized ox bezoars in her hands that made her forget everything and everyone else. As such, questions have reared up yet again about whether Maomao’s love for Jinshi is greater than or at least equates to how she feels about poisons.
As it stands, the question itself might be wrong entirely. It is her fixation on poisons that make her love for Jinshi as strong as it is. Confused? Well, let me break it down for you. There is one thing Maomao seems determined to do, and that is to stay away from trouble at all costs. However, she is the same person who absolutely relishes all the troubles that poison brings her.
Similarly, she constantly complains that she despises getting into all the situations Jinshi drags her into. However, just like poisons, she can’t help but be curious and find out more about the things that surround him. Be it the threats or the things he is used to.
For example, for all her denial, she has somehow studied the minute expressions Jinshi makes or the way he behaves in any situation, even without looking at his face. Moreover, her concerns about the shooters also point to that same conclusion.
As such, it becomes clear that it’s not a question of whether she loves poisons more than Jinshi, but the fact that her passion for poisons makes her love for Jinshi so strong and unconditional.
Fans comment on Maomao discarding Jinshi after getting her ox bezoars
As I stated above, all of Jinshi’s ideas of gently letting Maomao know his truth went out the window the moment the apothecary got her hands on the ox bezoars. For starters, she completely drowned him out while fantasizing about everything she could do with the medicinal components.

Moreover, she thought of a ridiculous threat to turn Jinshi into a real eunuch if finding out his secret ever got her into trouble. Inevitably, many fans pounced on the chance to clown those two idiots in love to their best abilities on the r/KusuriyaNoHitorigoto subreddit.

Maomao and Jinshi’s relationship just took a huge step forward after the much-anticipated Episode 12 aired last week. The second cour of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 starts this week without a break after the first cour’s conclusion.
As such, it’ll be interesting to see what other adventures the protagonists find themselves in the future. Moreover, I, like all the other fans, am also waiting to find out which direction their relationship will take from now on.
The Apothecary Diaries is streaming on Crunchyroll.
