I Didn’t Think We Could Get a Worse Anime Adaptation Than ‘Berserk’ but I Was Wrong

Ever since I started watching anime, I have believed that adapting a manga or a manhwa into an anime series or movie is one of the most creative and persevering works that, in the end, brings a lot of success and joy. However, this might not always be the case as sometimes, animation studios fail to hit the mark and thus create a piece that is not loved by fans and, in some way, gets criticized by the industry.

The last series that, according to me, failed to adapt to the enticing, adventurous, and dark themes of the manga was Berserk. The Berserk manga was written by Kentaro Miura and is considered one of the most thrilling stories in history; however, its anime adaptation failed to do justice to the series and was considered the biggest anime failure in history by many fans.

But it looks like I might be wrong, as another anime series has managed to fail at adapting a great Manhwa story that could have done wonders. This manhwa is none other than The Beginning After the End by TurtleMe, which is produced by Studio A-Cat and is being released on April 2, 2025.

The Beginning After the End anime adaptation does not do justice

The Beginning After the End began serialization in January 2017, and for many years, it was considered one of the greatest manhwa stories with a unique isekai theme that had never been seen before. Thus, when the anime adaptation was announced at New York Comic Con way back in October 2024, I got particularly excited about it.

I personally believed that it was going to be the next Solo Leveling or Sakamoto Days, as the story had already generated enough hype. A few teasers and trailers were also released, which put a special focus on Arthur Leywin, who was King Grey in his past life. However, when these trailers and stories, the animation did not impress me at all.

The flow of the story and the mid-tier animation quality did not justify the hype and excitement I had for the upcoming anime series.

Considering the anticipation fans had for The Beginning After the End anime series, the trailer and teaser certainly did not live up to their expectations, forcing them to criticize the series even before its release.

The Beginning After the End feels worse than Berserk

Whenever an anime series or movie is released that is based on a manga or manhwa, it is basically judged on the aspects of animation, story flow, and character presentation. Most of the time, I have noticed that the series manages to justify the story and provide a decent adaptation that lives up to the expectations.

However, there are some unlucky stories like Berserk that do not get a better anime adaptation no matter what the creators try.

And now it looks to me like The Beginning After the End might follow in the footsteps of Berserk or even surpass it in terms of getting a worse anime adaptation that could ruin the story for fans forever.

While it might be too soon for me to judge the series, if it does fail in adapting the story, it would affect the overall hype around Manhwa adaptations that were built by series like Solo Leveling. The Beginning After the End anime series holds a lot of pressure on its shoulders and let’s hope it lives up to the expectations.

The Beginning After the End will be available to stream on Crunchyroll.
