With Netflix’s new Devil May Cry series coming out in a few days and with its trailer revealing that the powers of the Force Edge and the Perfect Amulet will play a huge role in the show, it is clear that the anime will dive into the legend of Sparda, the legendary Dark Knight of Hell.
As seen in the trailer, the series will pit Dante against the White Rabbit (who is using Sparda’s weapons), and to counter him, Dante will have to explore his demon heritage and learn about his father, Sparda.

He will need someone to tell him about Sparda’s legend and about how he singlehandedly defeated Mundus. Who can be better for this than Matier from Devil May Cry 2?
Who is Matier? A look at Sparda’s devoted follower in Devil May Cry

Fans of the series will recognize Matier as a major character from Devil May Cry 2 (if you skipped the game, we won’t judge you). She is Lucia’s adoptive mother and is the reason why Dante visits Vie de Marli to stop the rise of Argosax.
Matier is a member of the clan of Protectors, and gamers know her for her optimistic attitude even when things go out of hand.
While fans may not remember this, Matier is not just a brave warrior; she is also a caring individual. Despite knowing Lucia’s heritage, she adopts her and raises her as her daughter, which shows the strength of her character.
She is one of the most well-written characters in the whole franchise (despite being from DMC 2) and she believes greatly in Dante, despite having never met him previously. Even when Dante jumps into the portal leading to the underworld at the end of the game, she is confident that he will return.

The reason for this belief in Dante is because, in her youth, she had fought alongside his father, Sparda. Her clan of Protectors and Sparda faced Argosax on Vie de Marli, and Sparda helped them push Argosax back into the underworld.
Following this, Sparda pursued him to finish the job. Witnessing such power is sure to impress anyone, and this is why she knows that the blood of Sparda can never be defeated by a pathetic demon like Argosax (also, to be honest, all the bosses in DMC 2 were weak, so we are not surprised).

While a lot of people respect Sparda, none are as devoted to him as her. She respects his strength and virtue, and Sparda seems to have respected her as well since it is revealed that after he returned to the Human World, he met with her to recount the events that took place on Vie de Marli.
Earning the respect of the Dark Knight? Now that is something to brag about for sure.
Could Matier reveal new secrets about Sparda in Netflix’s Devil May Cry?

Since Netflix and Adi Shankar’s Devil May Cry have shown us that the antagonist known as White Rabbit will be wielding the power of the perfect amulet and the Force Edge, we might get to see a few mentions of Sparda in the series.

For those who are unaware, Force Edge is the unwakened Sword of Sparda (which was used by Trish till Devil May Cry 5), and the perfect amulet is an artifact that opens the gates to the Demon Realm.
Since both halves of the amulet came from Sparda, it is obvious that he will be spoken about in the show. Perhaps Dante will learn that the Force Edge used to be his father’s weapon, and in this process, he will learn about his father’s power and legend.
He might need to learn why his father never protected them and why he is so feared and hated by demons.
This is where Matier can come in. Being such an ardent devotee of the legendary knight, she can no doubt recognize the unawakened blade of Sparda. She will then approach Dante and reveal to him, the secrets of his father, equipping him with the knowledge necessary to face White Rabbit.
Devil May Cry 2 is an underrated and unappreciated video game and is considered the black sheep of the series. Netflix can change that by bringing Matier, Lucia, and the Vie de Marli into the limelight by using their series and its lore.
Devil May Cry will be available to stream on Netflix from 3 April 2025.
