Sean Connery Outshone Bruce Glover’s Villain in ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, but Another James Bond Actor Bowed to His Talent

Sean Connery had a way of making villains look like sidekicks, and Diamonds Are Forever was no exception. Bruce Glover’s Mr. Wint was supposed to be menacing, but next to Connery’s effortless swagger, he felt more like an awkward henchman at a villain tryout.

While Glover struggled to leave an impression, another James Bond actor had no problem acknowledging Connery’s undeniable talent.

Sean Connery had a habit of stealing scenes, and Diamonds Are Forever was no different. Bruce Glover, who played the assassin Mr. Wint, brought his own quirky menace to the role, but Connery’s effortless charisma made him seem almost harmless. Turns out that another Bond legend, Sir Roger Moore, had a soft spot for Glover’s villainous turn. He once told Glover that his final moment in the film was the “funniest Bond moment” of all time.

Glover and jazz musician Putter Smith played the oddball hitmen duo, Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, in the 1971 Bond flick. Their characters were part of The Spangled Mob and spent most of the film failing to take down Connery’s Bond. But it was Wint’s unforgettable exit that caught Moore’s attention.

During the film’s climax, Connery’s Bond disposed of Wint in a rather undignified way – by grabbing him between the legs and tossing him overboard. Glover later admitted that moment got “the biggest laugh in the movie” (via Daily Star).

Despite being outshined by Connery, Glover had an impressive career beyond Bond. He starred in Chinatown (1974) alongside Jack Nicholson, Walking Tall (1973), and Hard Times (1975). He also made TV appearances in Mission: Impossible, The Six Million Dollar Man, and The Dukes of Hazzard.

Bruce Glover passed away at 92, as confirmed by his son, Back to the Future star Crispin Glover. Fans and fellow actors have paid tribute to the late actor, remembering his eccentric performances and undeniable screen presence. Even in a franchise packed with iconic villains, Glover’s Mr. Wint managed to leave a lasting impression, especially on a fellow Bond.

Bond, James Bond, is getting a 4K glow-up. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced that Dr. No through Diamonds Are Forever will hit 4K Blu-ray on June 3 (via Rollingstone). And for collectors? A sleek Steelbook edition is on the way.

The standard set costs $105, while the Steelbook comes in at $140. No official cover design yet, but pre-orders are live on Amazon. Given how fast collectible Steelbooks vanish, fans might want to lock in their copies early.

This marks the first time Connery’s legendary run, from Dr. No to Diamonds Are Forever, gets the ultra-HD treatment. Though he briefly stepped aside for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Connery’s Bond remains the gold standard.

Watch Diamonds Are Forever on Amazon Prime & Apple TV.
