James Bond Villain Bruce Glover’s Forgotten Role in Scarlett Johansson’s 2001 Action-Comedy Before Her Marvel Success

Bruce Glover might just be the most prolific non-famous actor of the 20th century. With roles spread over the better half of the century, he has appeared in some of the most celebrated Hollywood features of all time while also managing to stay under the radar of the majority of movie industry fans.

However, to keen-eyed followers like Sir Roger Moore, Bruce Glover existed as one of the funniest people in the business. Despite starring in relatively smaller parts, Glover managed to leave a strong impression on those who knew what to look for in a movie. Among his numerous forgettable films was one where he starred alongside Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi in 2001.

Scarlett Johansson has been a prolific part of the Hollywood industry ever since her time as a child actor. Her role in films like Home Alone 3 and Ghost World may not have been the most memorable, but for a pre-MCU era actor, Johansson delivered quite a strong yet effective impression in her early works.

One of the strongly effective aspects of Scarlett Johansson’s pre-MCU era arc as an actor includes her association with Bruce Glover himself. Renowned for his small roles across impressive Hollywood films, Glover has appeared in countless famous movies throughout his dynamic and enduring career.

However, it is his 2001 action comedy starring the Black Widow actress that remains one of the 21st century’s most largely misunderstood movies and depicts the coming-of-age era in its most chaotic and surprisingly honest form.

Ghost World exists as a critique and a commentary on the “adult world” as seen through the eyes of a teenager. Although the film begins with a hilarious take on the oddball nature of the said world and its adherence to norms and regulations, it quickly becomes a study of how to fight against conformity.

The black comedy, adapted from a 1990s comic book of the same name, currently holds an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

As the father of prolific actor Crispin Glover, Bruce Glover was already quite renowned as a veteran of the acting industry since the middle of the 20th century. His career spanned movies ranging from James Bond to neo-noir biographical films like Walking Tall in the mid-1970s.

One of Glover’s most memorable roles came as the Bond villain, Mr. Wint in the 1971 film, Diamonds Are Forever, starring Sean Connery. With one of the most hilarious death scenes ever recorded in the 007 franchise, Glover solidified his role in the franchise as one of the most memorable Bond villains.

Moreover, he also appeared in other significant projects such as Chinatown alongside Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, 1970’s Mission: Impossible, Perry Mason, and Hard Times (1975). After his half-a-century-long life of entertainment and versatility, the character actor passed away on 12 March 2025 at the age of 92.
