Simon slump continues for Fine Gael as party suffers opinion poll slip while FG and SF tied as most popular with public

SUPPORT for Fine Gael has slipped by three points, according to a new poll.

Tanaiste Simon Harris will be concerned that his party has dropped to 17 per cent, down from 20 per cent.

Fine Gael still remain the third most popular party, which reflects the result of the general election back in November.

Meanwhile, support for Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein is tied at 22 per cent, according to a Red C poll published by the Sunday Business Post.

The poll finds that Fianna Fail have increased their popularity by two points to 22, tied with Sinn Fein, who dropped a point.

The Social Democrats are unchanged at seven per cent, while Labour is also unchanged on four per cent.

Independent Ireland remains on four per cent, while People Before Profit-Solidarity is unchanged on three per cent.

Aontú is also unchanged on four per cent, while the Independents are up two points to 13 per cent.

Others are unchanged on one per cent.

The online poll of 1,002 adults was conducted between March 21 and 26.

The margin of error is plus or minus three per cent.

The results of the poll will likely please Taoiseach Micheal Martin, who has built on the results of the general election four months ago, despite the Dail speaking row dominating Irish politics since the formation of the new Government earlier in the year.

The Dail will vote on Tuesday on a confidence motion in the Ceann Comhairle as the Government continues to strongly back Verona Murphy.

Five opposition parties have tabled a motion which states that the Ceann Comhairle no longer retains the confidence of all members of Dail Eireann.

‘UNFOUNDED ALLEGATIONS’

She has “categorically” rejected what she said were the “totally unfounded allegations” around her part in the Dail speaking rights row on Tuesday, and fully intends to continue in her role.

The opposition had alleged that she colluded with the Government parties to get the new speaking times for the Regional TDs and coalition backbenchers over the line.

Fine Gael deputy leader Helen McEntee confirmed that the motion of no confidence in the Ceann Comhairle will be countered with a confidence motion from the Government.
