In the world of music, Kelly Clarkson has built a big name for herself with several chart-topping albums to her name. But this popularity also came with several challenges. As soon as she won American Idol in 2002, people immediately started criticizing her.
Being the very first winner of a popular show should have been the happiest day of her life, but some tried their level best to ruin it.

However, she was not one to let things slide and called out the hypocrisy she witnessed in the industry. In an interview, the singer said that the very people who criticized her later took seats as mentors on other singing shows, such as The Voice.
People who criticized Kelly Clarkson later became mentors for The Voice
When American Idol aired for the very first time in 2002, anticipation was running high. After this, only a few could have predicted just how much it would change the music industry. But this idea of launching a singer through a competition was met with a lot of skepticism.
And at the center of the entire drama was singer Kelly Clarkson. She was the show’s very first winner, and her remarkable talents quickly made her a household name.

But despite this huge popularity and singing skills, many in the industry weren’t ready to accept an American Idol winner as a legitimate artist. So, instead of celebrating her big victory, they argued that a show wasn’t the “real” way to enter the business.
Now, more than two decades later, in an interview via Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, she talked about the irony of how dramatically the industry has changed. After reflecting on the backlash she faced, Clarkson added:
People were really mean. People that were really mean have been coaches. You know what I’m saying? Like, hated talent shows, and they ended up being on The Voice.
While the singer did not reveal the names, her words did hint at a deeper frustration with the way singing competitions were once criticized, only for the same concept to now become widely accepted.
After American Idol, shows like The Voice, The X Factor, and America’s Got Talent have since achieved great popularity. Meanwhile, some of the people who looked down on her talents have now embraced these platforms.
Does Kelly Clarkson have any regrets about her divorce?
After her messy divorce from Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson is embracing a new chapter of her life without any regrets. Now, she’s more focused on her kids and her music career. A source close to the singer revealed via People that she’s in a good space after relocating from Los Angeles to New York. And that now “she has the primary custody of the kids and is a great mom.”

The insider also added that though her career is also equally important, Clarkson is a very hands-on mother. Her marriage to Blackstock lasted for about seven years before the couple separated in 2020. During this marriage they welcomed two kids, and Blackstock also has two more kids from a previous marriage. While the duo had a very messy divorce battle, they finalized things in 2022.
But the legal issues between the duo didn’t end with the divorce. In 2023, a California labor commissioner ruled that Blackstock owed Clarkson about $2.6 million in past commissions.
Apparently he had overstepped his legal authority as her manager. But immediately after this, the singer also filed some court documents that mentioned that the said amount may be significantly higher.
