Will Devil May Cry Uncover Lucia’s Origins?: The Possibilities of Vie de Marli Inclusion

Devil May Cry is a massively successful video game franchise, with nearly all of its games being massive hits among the player base. We say “nearly” because even a successful franchise like Devil May Cry has its black sheep. In this case, Devil May Cry 2 is largely considered to be the weakest link.

Despite introducing a new setting and a new protagonist in the form of Via de Marli and Lucia, respectively, the events of the game haven’t been mentioned since. Can Netflix’s new Devil May Cry change that?

Lucia was left unacknowledged despite having potential

First introduced in Devil May Cry 2, Lucia is an artificial demon created by Arius, an occult businessman who wishes to harness immense demonic power to fulfill his wishes. Lucia was raised on the island of Vie de Marli (or Dumary, as it’s called in the game for some weird reason).

She was raised to think that she was a descendant of the clan of protectors and that it was her job to protect the land from demons.

However, as the game progresses, it is revealed to her that she was created by Arius, and this revelation shakes her up. She is so disturbed by it that near the end of the game, she asks the Devil Hunter Dante to kill her since she was a devil as well.

She is afraid that her darkness might take over her and that she might hurt humanity.

I thought… I was a descendant of the clan that protects Vie de Marli… the ones who have the blood of the devils… But the truth is… I… was created by Arius… I could become a monster and attack the humans at anytime! Now, kill me… It’s your job to hunt devils.

Dante, however, notices that she is tearing up. So he hits her with the classic “devils never cry” line (does he use that on all the women he meets?) and goes to the underworld to slay some demons, leaving Lucia alone.

At the end of Devil May Cry 2, we see Lucia waiting for Dante in his office while fidgeting with the coin that he had given to her. She thinks about his words and wonders if he was right. She then hears the rev of a motorcycle and runs outside, expecting it to be Dante.

She then becomes an important character in the universe. (Awkward Pause). Okay, that was a joke. This is the last we see of her, and neither Lucia nor the Vie de Marli is ever mentioned again in the franchise.

A reason for this might be that no other game in the franchise is as universally hated as Devil May Cry 2. Fans hate the story of the game, and while Lucia’s character seemed to have potential, it wasn’t explored enough.

There were several complaints about the gameplay being bad, with the bosses being too weak and the weapons being too overpowered.

According to the lore of the game, Argosax, the big bad, was supposed to be equal to Mundus in power, but Dante takes him down in base form with a single shot. This was a huge letdown and just added another reason to hate the game.

Perhaps if the story had been better, with Lucia completely coming to terms with her heritage and joining Dante at Devil May Cry along with Trish, fans would have been happier.

But instead of doing this, the developers just abandoned the game and only gave it a slight nod in DMC V.

How can Netflix’s Devil May Cry do justice to Lucia and Vie de Marli?

Adi Shankar, the creator of Netflix’s new Devil May Cry, has been quite open about the lore of his show. While he has stated that he will respect the canon lore, he has also made it clear that he will not hesitate to change up a few things.

This essentially means that the show will be set in a separate universe and will have its own lore.

This is a golden opportunity to do justice to Devil May Cry 2. We’ve already seen from the trailer that several characters from all over the franchise are appearing in the show.

Perhaps they could find a way to incorporate Lucia into it as well.

But if Adi Shankar is having a problem with that, we are more than happy to help. The trailer suggests that White Rabbit plans to use the perfect amulet to open up a portal to connect the human realm with the demon realm.

What if activating the portal causes Argosax to break free? This is when Lucia would make her appearance and inform Dante about Argosax and his history with Sparda, and Vie de Marli.

Does it sound like a stretch? Haha, absolutely. But will it work as a way to reintroduce Lucia and make her viable in the story? Definitely. It’s high time that Devil May Cry 2 gets its redemption.

Devil May Cry will be available to stream on Netflix from 3 April 2025.
