The Much-hated ‘Game of Thrones’ Show Creator Also Wrote One of the Best Marvel Superhero Origin Films of All Time

For all the love Game of Thrones had received in its initial seasons, it all went downhill since the last season aired. The infamous final season proved to be quite the bane for the fandom, which was facing extinction had it not been for House of the Dragons.

While the Emma D’Arcy starrer went a long way in undoing some of the damage to the reputation, some people will find it hard to wipe out the memories of what might be one of the most underwhelming finales of all time. And David Benioff will be at the top of that list.

D&D were at the heart of the hate that came in the direction of Game of Thrones‘ final season

David Benioff, alongside his old partner and longtime collaborator, D.B. Weiss, was in charge of bringing the story of Westeros to life. And many believed that the duo (better known as D&D) had things under control. That is when Season 8 happened.

The absence of a canon story (George RR Martin is yet to write the last two books) and a pressing timeline meant that the creators had no other option but to improvise. That is what they tried. And it was an epic failure.

Season 8, which spanned just 6 episodes, seemed abrupt, too short, disregarded the character arc of various characters, and of course, was underwhelming for the fans. The result? A series that had ruled the charts (and fans’ hearts) for almost a decade almost passed out of everyone’s memory.

The duo had a troubled history ever since, being associated with two large-scale projects that were eventually scrapped. While they did strike gold with The Three Body Problem, the stains of Season 8 will be hard to wipe away. But that doesn’t mean they are mere pushovers.

David Benioff has been at the heart of a solid X-Men movie

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, for all the disrepute that has come their way, have always given us projects to cherish. Benioff, in particular, has given fans arguably one of the greatest comic book adaptations of all time.

After portraying the Trojan War with great perfection in Troy, the 54-year-old decided to take up another adaptation. This time for a story from a different era – the story of Wolverine.

The Adamantium clawed mutant is arguably the most loved X-Men. It doesn’t come as a shock that he was at the center of the X-Men franchise which debuted in 2000. And it didn’t come as a shock that he got his own origin story. Benioff took up the mantle of writing the script for the movie alongside Skip Woods. And a fine job he did.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine settled its reputation as one of the best movies in the X-Men universe and revitalized the franchise. While Hugh Jackman will walk away with most of the plaudits for the movie’s success, the 25th Hour writer made perfect use of the lore to bring Wolverine’s back story to life.

The movie cruised to $373 million worldwide, making it one of the more successful projects in the franchise. And Benioff was at the center of it all. What he wouldn’t give to go back to that time?
