Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel Legend of Korra have shown us time and time again that the Avatar’s life is often one rife with pain, suffering, and tragedy. While this might just be the nature of the world that the characters exist in, a theory suggests that the Avatar might actually be cursed for funding Raava and causing a disbalance between the worlds of man and spirit.

Before Avatar Wan, the progenitor of the Avatar Cycle, there was no being that could master the four elements, much less be a medium between the spirits and races of men. However, Wan, in fusing with Raava, might have made himself into a necessary linchpin, one that was cursed by the spirits to face tragedy, after tragedy, after tragedy.
Avatar often faced challenges that were unique to them, and especially scarring

Be it Kuruk losing the love of his life, Wan failing to stop the war despite being the most powerful person on the planet, Aang losing the Air Nomads, or Korra being the most prideful Avatar (while losing the cycle altogether), these trials seem to have been custom made for each incarnation, something that speaks to the nature of the position, which, throughout the history of the world, seems to have invited trouble time and time again.
Raava and Wan’s fusion was one of the most blasphemous things that the world as it was could have faced, in a time when spirits and humans inhabited the same world, but were still largely divided. This could have caused spirits, in general, to be pissed off at the fact that some much power was essentially handed over to a human, hence cursing the cycle to be reborn in the human world again and again.
Avatar: Seven Havens could see spirits aping Raava and Vaatu

There is little evidence for the fact that Raava and Vaatu are the only spirits that can bond with humans. Given that the next Avatar has been teased to have spirit enemies along with bending enemies, it is possible that intermediate spirits would find ways to fuse with human beings to level the playing field with the Avatar. Even Vaatu himself could have given rise to another Dark Avatar, which would serve the twin storyline in the show perfectly.
Exploiting Spirits to go after the Avatar seems to be perfect for the theme that has been set up in the Avatarverse, which might see humans and spirits being more divided than ever, thanks to Korra leaving the doors to the spirit world open post the Harmonic Convergence. This might have caused the planet to be run over by spirit creatures, completely forcing humanity to give up all the progress that they had made.
